Now Reading... posted 07 September 2004 in Off-Topic DiscussionNow Reading... by Taliesin, Peralogue

Ilium for me as well... I read 4 pages before bed last night, and that's all I've gotten done so far... hopefully I can at least jog my memory with a partial reread and take some part in the discussion, though ideally I'd be able to reread it all....

And, I'm sort of reading Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield, about the battle of Thermopylae. Read 5 pages of that one while eating my lunch today....

School sure does screw up my reading schedule

Though, it does bring about the interesting experience of simultaneously reading Ilium and the Iliad. view post

What subgroup of speculative fiction do you prefer? posted 07 September 2004 in Literature DiscussionWhat subgroup of speculative fiction do you prefer? by Taliesin, Peralogue

Pretty much copy and paste what Alric said, and you'd get a good approximation of my own views

But yeah, the genre definition doesn't matter nearly as much as the quality of the writing, the experience that I get in reading the book. And, I like those books that push the boundaries in one way or another, rather than relying on convention, though of course there is also much to be said for utilizing the conventions in new and interesting ways.... view post

I continue to shock people with my veer towards liberalism... not that I was ever really conservative, just more undecided.... view post

Haven't read it yet, but I'm going to read some of it in Greek next semester. I'm excited... I've had enough of reading dramas for the moment. view post

AMERICAN POLITICS... posted 05 November 2004 in Philosophy DiscussionAMERICAN POLITICS... by Taliesin, Peralogue

Well, this was a rather disappointing first presidential election for me... I'm just starting to make it out of my post-election depression. But, at least now Bush will have the opportunity to get the blame for the mess he has created over the past four years, rather than pawning it off on Kerry. Of course, I'd also rather see someone in office who I think has a chance of starting to correct things, rather than going further in some very bad directions.

I have a number of friends who voted for Bush, many because they are Republicans and there was never any questions, but also some who voted for him simply because they think he's a nicer person (an assessment which I would take issue with.) But then, there are people like my father who have always voted for Republicans for president, but this year voted Kerry, because of the disturbing domination of the Republican party and the president by the evangelical right. I think the real trouble with our country is that people are confusing morality with self-righteousness. view post

Finally reading The Warrior-Prophet, and loving every minute of it! Unfortunately, it's a bit too enjoyable, and is eating into my study time. Oh well! view post
