I read some of Ian Irvine's Books...THE VIEW FROM THE MIRROR and It started strong...but dragged. Near the middle of the 3rd book I felt nothing much had happened but these guys rehashing how angry they were at each other for betrayals...then Making new alianaces with those same guys, and getting pissed again. Celia Dart Thornton's Bitterbynd series was also convoluted and meandering to the point of boredom. The Best part of it was a magic metal that repulsed the earth, enabling them to make flying horseshoes....for flying horses. view post

I loved Tads early works. Sure you can always find simialarites to JRR in much of the fantasy realm....but Tad has a great lyrical style like G G Kay. Sure the Hyenrsteri(? sp) reminded me of the Riders of Rohan....but some charaters were more similar to Feist's Riftwar. I'm sure there are more..but I haven't read it 1st came out. Oh god...I'm old. view post

posted 14 Sep 2006, 07:09 in Literature DiscussionEddings by Scel, Candidate

I remember Eddings fondly from my teens...but by the time I was reading the Domes of Fire...he'd lost me. The Belgariad, etc are a great place to your 1st bike...before you get a motorcycle or car. A friend likes his new series, but I just can't go badck into his realm...the banter leaves me annoyed. view post

posted 14 Sep 2006, 08:09 in Literature DiscussionErikson Neophyte by Scel, Candidate

Erikson's magic systems are kinda complicated, and all the varied races and their history and abilities make it hard to keep track and get INTO...but It's worth the effort. There's an Encyclopedia malazan online somewhere that helps keep track of everything. I'm on House of Chains right now...and has delayed my shipment of book 6...but they shipped 5 already...but I'm trying to slow down. Some parts are suprisingly funny, which is good comic relief to the occasional darkness. Some of it is quit stirring emotionally too. Can't ask for much more than that. view post

That sucks...I actually got Chills when I read the final was going to be "A Time for Wolves". In the "Graphic Novel" Edition of A Hedge Knight, there was a chapter from The Sworn Sword...are they doing a full Comic/graphic novel of that too? I love Dunk and Egg. view post

[quote="noodles0585":3k0k8hiu]i am currently reading MBoF, asiaf, WoT. i consider these to be great fantasy how ever when i finish with these i will be on the look out for more so any suggestions that people may have are welcome i am really into the more gritty fantasy like PoN, asiaf, and MBoF so books like that are what i am most interested in.[/quote:3k0k8hiu] There are a lot of Fantasy writers....but You might of started reading at the TOP of the genre. :P As afar as Gritty... Mathew Woodring Stover writes some bloody violent books. Which might suprise some, since he also writes Starwars novels. Try "Heroes Die" Sort of Sci-fi Fantasy or "Iron Dawn" Historical fantasy, dealing with events in the Med, after the Trojan war. Other Writers you might look into(read their Amazon reviews)..are Feist, Goodkind(some people don't like him...but like Jordan he started Strong)..Elizabeth Hayden, Robin Hobb, J. V. Jones, Carol Berg, of Course Moorcock...Guy Gavreil Kay...etc view post

Conan is like James Bond. By the end of the Story he's kicked the evil wizard or monster's ass and Done it with the sexy babe. :P The new compendiums of Howards originals are cool, as are the 2 volumes Robert Jordan did. view post

posted 14 Sep 2006, 08:09 in Literature DiscussionGates of Fire by Scel, Candidate

Loved "Gates" and "Tides"...Amazons was a little too deprssing. There were rumors years ago of Bruce Willis making a Movie based on Gates....but soon there will be a movie based on a graphic novel The 300. From Apple's quicktime site "Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite." They have updates and stuff. I would of prefered a "Gates" movie. view post

Whenever I see him on TV he always makes good fact based arguments. Then people slam him with opinions...which kinda makes him look even smarter. view post

I think he said they had dog like if you look at a human toro's width, then a dogs which is narower...placing that doglike torso on humanoid legs, upright...makes for a twisted looking blend. I recognize that animals have their own beauty....but how beautiful of a face are we talking about here? (I think he said the 1st Sranc Kellus killed had a beautiful face)Beautiful in a human female style or beautiful like a tiger or great white shark. Non-human non-sexual beauty. view post

People should remember that Strong and "Liberated" women are a recent development in our world...and indeed are unknown in some contemporary cultures. Now in (even a fictional world) world that is patriachial, women were marginalised. And OUR modern concepts would seem totally out of place. Anyway, a woman like Esmi lived as best she could with no power of her own. She could of been killed by any of her clients, or on the road with little or no consequences to the killer. So you can say her being alive at all and maintaining her independent spirit and even desiring LOVE is a triumph. view post
