one of the most interesting aspect of the PoN series (IMO) is the race of the nonmen. Do people think we will get to see a more general apearance of them. At this point it seems only a couple of nonmen as members of the consult will make an appearance in further novels, but their tragic history as witnessed in the apendixes really raises the level of interest and empathy towards this race and culture. I would love to see the last nonmen king or members of the race en masse. Its hard to tell how many even exist in the present. They still hold a kingdom, but could be fewer than a thousnad survivors. Any general oppinions/thoughts? The kinda make me think of the eldar in tolkiens writing. view post
I believe when the second apocalypse starts we can see what is ever left of the non eratoc nonmen to go out in their numbers and attack. Even if it means extinction I think they wont miss a chance to fight the consult. And since they remeber despair they should remeber this grudge. And theirs one nonmen mansion left at least. In fact its pretty close to golgotterah view post
It is actually yhe only surviving Nonmen mansion. I'm not sure if we'll see them go out en masse or not, they seem reminicent of Tolkien's elves in that they are fading from the world as men come to dominate it. Scott has mentioned the possibility of a side book that deals more with the Non-men though I believe, telling the story of one legendary Non-man in particular view post
so were told. Personally i dont see the nonmen passing up a chance to battle inchoroi regardless the situation. view post
The nonmen seem to hate men now, so I'm not sure they would fight on their side in a war. There could be a side chapter of them attacking Golgotterath when the army of sranc was gone, or before it is formed. view post
I can't remember an actual description of nonmen. How do they differ from men, physically? view post
They're taller. view post
I can't remember an actual description of nonmen. How do they differ from men, physically?[/quote:3624nv5j] Unknown so far. In TDTCB Kellhus immediately sussed that his opponent in the far north was not human. Achamian (in his dreams as Seswatha) talks of Mekeritrig's inhumanly handsome face - apparently Nonmen are good sorts. view post
I think all we know is taller and beautiful in an inhuman manner. Other than that we haven't yet had an actual physical description of the non-men view post
The thing I don't get is that the Nonmen are descibed as prenaturally beautiful but the same time bald and with fused teeth. Its certainly not a traditional human concept of beauty. view post
All depends on what you think inhumanly beautiful means. It could mean many things inhuman is a negative word where as beautiful is a positive word. If you look up inhuman in the dictionary you get words like "lacking pity, kindness, or mercy: Savage, b. Cold impersonal, 2. of or suggesting a nonhuman class o beings. So when it says inhumnaly beautiful it does not have to be a positive thing. view post

Its certainly not a traditional human concept of beauty.[/quote:13ba2e94] I don't recall the reference to "baldness" and "fused teeth", but it could simply be the result of their lifespan. The Nonmen, those that survived, are physically immortal but probably their immortality is not accompanied by eternal youth, like Tithonus of Greek legend (certainly now the Nonmen have no Inchoroi physcians if they are not with the Consult). Baldness, bad dentures, creaky joints, crotchetiness etc. might all be maladies the Nonmen might be expected to suffer, even though they still retain some hints of their youthful beauty (they probably also complain about the government fulltime, taxes, lack of respect by once subject races etc.) view post
Immortality was achieved with the Tekne which means making it so your cells can regenerate ad infinitum We've seen two Nonmen (and no new nonmen have been born since the Womb Plague) and they seem fit and healthy.
So it shouldn't be age, the baldness and fused teeth does sound familiar though although I can't recall where it was I saw it.
I'm not actually even sure if the inhumanly beautiful tag was attached to the Nonmen or not, it was to the Sranc of course, the Inchoroi being as perverse as they are. But I do seem to think it applied to the Nonmen too at some point.

I've leant out two of the books to people but if my memory serves me correctly. Mekeritrig is descibed as inhumanly beautiful or something similar when Achamian is being tortured by the Scarlet Spires in WP and he is having nightmares of being on the walls of Dagliash. Mekeritrigs teeth are descibed as fused in the scene at the start of TTT. I think there are a couple of references to Nonmen being baled possibly when Aenglus is captured by the consult. I think the point about the Sranc is that their faces were designed deliberately by the Inchoroi to resemble the Nonmens in order to taunt them. Anor I wouldn't have said the legend of Tithonius is particularly apt as Entropic says they have been preserved by the Tekne. I don't know if that would preserve their hair from falling out though. Perhaps even the Inchoroi haven't invented a cure for that or hangovers yet. If you don't know allready Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote a very good poem on the myth of Tithonius which is worth checkning out. view post
Nonmen were men before their transformation by the Inchoroi...possible? view post
No...... Nonmen are pre-Inchoroi. view post
Yes but do we know for sure that they were different than men before the inchoroi or could this be the name men attributed to them when they recorded their history? hmm? view post
Yes but do we know for sure that they were different than men before the inchoroi or could this be the name men attributed to them when they recorded their history? hmm?[/quote:2qpq28lm] I think we know for sure to a high degree of certainty. There were true men in Earwa (kept as slaves or clients of the Non-men) before the Cuno-Inchoroi wars. Of course the name "Non-men" was something that was applied to them by the founding tribes in the breaking of the gates - I think somewhere in the glossary, this is mentioned, i.e. "Non-men", "Others", "Not us" all names from a human perspective. view post
Yes but do we know for sure that they were different than men before the inchoroi or could this be the name men attributed to them when they recorded their history? hmm?[/quote:35chrti6] We most certainly do, a read through the TTT glossary has all of the evidence needed. There were men in Eanna and their weaker cousins in Earwa as a slave race. view post
Oh. -------- What about the description of The Battle of Trantis Bay? "...thereby denying the [b:ybb6i0mj]First [/b:ybb6i0mj]Holy War its primary source of water..." Does this mean there are more holy wars coming?? lol view post
..Yes there will, as is evident from the very beginning of TDTCB. Otherwise, quoting from the "Compendium of the [i:2gqyx5vo]First[/i:2gqyx5vo] Holy War" would make little sense. view post
In terms of beauty, one could say a flower is beautiful, but that doesn't equate to human beauty. ie. the non-men are beautiful for certain traits (porcelain skin [like the sranc] and hairless bodies). This is not typically human characteristics of sexual attractiveness, but is still quite beautiful outside of our typical traits. view post

I believe the second holy war will be led by Kellhus against the consult and the no-god. I do not think the consult has faced crazed religious fanatics yet
