Do you believe a God exists? posted 17 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionDo you believe a God exists? by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

oh i agree, i do have christian friends that are just fantastic.. but i'm a good person, i'm compassionate and loving, and have a similar take on life as them.. but because i do not accept jesus, that makes them so much better? i cannot accept that.

besides, even if i could, i just have too many qualms with too many things.. i prefer to think for myself.

i think the bible is cool tho. i just see it as a collection of cultural stories, just like the mabinogion or the baghavad gita (sp?)... it's a great -story- view post

i think the bigger problem is that after centuries of burning coal and oil, we're about to suffocate ourselves with pollutants..

just cos something makes our lives easier, does not mean t's the best choice.

cheap, reliable, effective, versatiler, killing us. hmm, sounds like a good deal to me. view post

Edge, pick up the first too, the third or fourth is just coming out in the US soon. The publishing schedules should be synced up by book 7 I think. (The UK is ahead of Canada...they already have Book 6) and order the rest online from Chapters.ca or Amazon.ca if you like them.

Gierra, Although I'm a fellow Torontonian I've only lived here since September and so haven't been to Bakka-Pheonix, but since they are the pre-eminent SF&amp;F retailer in Canada and Erickson is Canadian I should think they do.[/quote:3izkw3mv]

heh, i've lived here most of my life, and only found out about the place after they moved to queen &amp; bathurst.. only been there twice, myself. you s hould definitely check out the store, i'm sorry it took me so long to find it <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> view post

st. patrick was a welshman who coverted ireland to christianity and drove out all the pagans (snakes/serpents).

he is now celebrated by getting raucoussly drunk.

i may have some irish in me, but i despise st patrick and all that he stands fo.

but i did buy some irish whiskey for the first time. as a scot, i'm still biased as to who makes the best whiskies, but it wasn;t so bad. view post

Do you believe a God exists? posted 20 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionDo you believe a God exists? by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

i don;t think that the existence of god negates the big bang, and vice versa. the reason that scientists cannot (and probably will never) know what happened before is that all our laws of physics relate to our universe, but since it is impossible to tell what happened before the beginning of the universe, all our posturing and comtimplating will do nothing, because those laws don;t necessarily comply with what existed before, if anything. the big bang was the beginning of what we have now, and the end of what was before.

i don;t know if any of that made any sense, actually. view post

Free Will posted 21 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionFree Will by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

i believe in both free will and destiny/fate.

i kinda think of life as a choose-your-own-adventure story. ultimately your life is made up of choices. you have the free will to make those choices as you see fit, but each choice will lead in a predetermined path.

looking at how the universe it made up, i can;t imagine everything being completely random. view post

Transhumanism and Genetic Engineering posted 21 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionTranshumanism and Genetic Engineering by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

i'm not terribly against it, i think we're just so far from knowing enough about it that we would not be able to do something responsibly. it raises so many questions about regulations, where do you draw the line with what you can and cannot do. science and technology are part of our evolution.. we certainly didn;t get to the top of the food chain by the strength of our bodies!

obviously it has a lot of good points. we can test fetuses now to see if they will get things like CP and MS, so if genetic engineering can correct that, then that's great. but then people will say, well we can tell our child will have bad eyesight, let's fix that. oh, our child will be more prone to obesity, let's fix that. oh, our child will have freckles, we don;t like that, let's get rid of them. and so on and so on. where do you draw the line?

i haven't thought enough about it, or even knoiw enough about the subject to really form a solid opinion tho. view post

to answer the original question of this thread, I believe thousands of gods exist.

Some people call me a neo-pagan or whatever.

Personally, I believe that men make gods. I believe that in the beginning, a god is just an idea, but after hundreds, thousands, even millions of people continually pray/worship to a certain deity, that deity is then made real.

I make my own scented oils, incense, altars, charms. I've been working silver and other metals for over 10 years so I'm good at the whole charm thing by now hehe. I always wear around 3-6 charms on my body everyday and won't leave the house without them. I know that seems wierd and I suppose it is a little =P

One thing I do is keep my personal practices to myself. I usually don't talk about them to anyone, I keep it a private relationship between the deities that I do worship and myself.

I think religion is a good thing, it helps inspire many people to be someone better, to help others, etc. However there's always a flipside and it's sad that we have such extremists today in the world. Like Pat Robertson and other supreme asses of the Christian right or Islamic militants who decide to kill all the infidels.

In general, I just try to be a good person and be nice to people.[/quote:1ja4mxte]

You sound like the book American Gods.[/quote:1ja4mxte]

haha, what i was thinking exactly. view post

i don;t really write much. i could link to a story i wrote that is on a friends' band site, but then you'd all see my boobies, and well, i don;t know you that well.

but here is a limerick i wrote like 10 years ago while bored and in a coffee shop. it's terribly not great or anything, just thought i'd share.

a stale cigarette mixed with caffeine
i sit in a corner where i am not seen
i ache and cry
and wonder why
it had never been.

um, ya.

pretty much in the same way that hunting is a sport.
