i never heard of david eddings until a couple months ago. i read the belgariad in about a week and i just loved em. they're hardly comparable to some more epic series' but they're just so fun.

mind you i still constantly read xanth books. they're like a break from everything else. view post

Anyone read American Gods, by Neil Gaiman? posted 14 March 2006 in Literature DiscussionAnyone read American Gods, by Neil Gaiman? by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

Quote: "Kingslayer":1y8objxu
I have read American Gods, Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. I have all of his books including a couple of his childrens books simply cuz they are good stories (Like Coraline). Good Omens was an excellent book (Authored along with Terry Pratchett).[/quote:1y8objxu]

i read good omens some years ago, and then was recommended american gods afterwards. i think both are excellent. i've since lent it to so many people to read, who have pretty much all enjoyed it very much.

i enjoyed good omens more, simply because it was so much fun. i'd end up laughing on the bus and having people stare at me all weird like.

anyone read anansi boys yet? i got it for yule and it was wicked.

actually, anything by neil gaiman is pretty good. i loved coraline. view post

r.a. salvatore's war of the spider queen series posted 14 March 2006 in Literature Discussionr.a. salvatore's war of the spider queen series by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

has anyone read this series of 7 books, all based around drow elves? i really haven't read too many forgotten realms books, but my boyfriend lent me this whole series. it's not written by salvatore, but i guess the story concept was his, and he had other authors write each book.

i definitely recommend it to anyone who likes that sort of stuff. view post

Drugs posted 14 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionDrugs by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

i have used A LOT of drugs in my day, but i really don;t anymore. i like to smoke pot still, and to have the odd drink, but more serious drugs just aren;t worth the hassle anymore.

everyone's reasons for drug use are different. i find that smoking pot helps to relax me to the point where i can really let out my creativity. i paint a lot, and while i can paint while totally sober, it just isn;t the same. it's like my brain is running to quickly for me to be able to sit calmly and paint. view post

who should determine what is "right"? posted 14 March 2006 in Philosophy Discussionwho should determine what is "right"? by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

well, one the one hand, i would say that it is up to the individual to decide what is right. however, what if one person thinks it is right to kill someone out of revenge? it is up to those who are in power to set out some rules and guidlines as to what is right and wrong.

i don;t think those who are in power should decide upon things that are individual.

for example, marijuana is illegal. they think it's wrong to smoke it. however, that should be something that is up to an individual to decide upon. holding the door for an elderly person is right, but people don;t do it as much as they should.

certain things that affect other people should be outlined by the masses and those in power. things that only affect yourself whould be decided upon by yourself. view post

oddly enough, my job currently pays $1400 a month, which i find to be ridiculously low.

mind you, with the salary i made before claiming EI, $1400 was a drastic drop.

Drugs posted 16 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionDrugs by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

sokar: i really think it depends on the person. my brain moves insanely fast normally. i'll have a zillion thoughts at once, and end up feeling as though i've missed something important. pot slows down my thought process, making it easier to catch each individual thought and being able to ponder it for at least a moment. back in high school i was, um, a class clown, sorta. my art teacher knew i cam to class most days high as a kite, but she didn;t mind because those days were the ones where i just sat quietly and did my work.

drugs are not bad, it's how some people react to them. i know some people who can;t stand pot, it makes them nervous and paranoid, etc. i've really never had that feeling tho. i've done a hell of a lot of acid too, back when it was easier to find than pot. some people would have terrible trips and freak out, but that is something that never happened to me. i always knew what was going on and was always in control. some people can;t handle that, and they shouldn;t do drugs. view post

Nuclear Power posted 16 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionNuclear Power by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

i'm kind of split on the issue. looking back at chernobyl obviously raises the concerns of something like that happening again. however, science has evolved a hell of a lot within the last 50 years, and i think nuclear power would be a lot safer nowadays.

i was born in pickering, ontario, where there is a nuclear plant, but i never really knew much about.

however, i think there are way better alternatives, and that nuclear power is only part of the future energy needs.

for example, denmark has been investing in a lot of windmills. something like that has a huge start up cost, but it eventually pays for itself. when the world runs out of oil and coal, the danes will be laughing their asses off at us, cos they will be basically self sufficient. i think more nations definitely shold be looking into wind powered generators, as well as solar powered ones. if they start phasing these things in now, by the time we truly need them they will be there. view post

good question. i always wondered if i would be happier if i were dumb.

my thoughts are that, is it not possible to be concious of all the suffering of man in the world, and still be content?

or am i just a deranged sicko who takes pleasure in bad things? view post

i think it would be excellent to see everyones take on what the characters look like.

in fact, i think i will dojust that. i'm moving into a new apartment in about a week, and i will have lots of light with which to paint, and maybe i'll do a series.

all i paint is portraits anyways, so why not.

i'd definitely be interested in seeing other people's interpretations. view post

Nuclear Power posted 17 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionNuclear Power by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

i disagree about windmills being an eyesore. a few years ago i went over to sweden, and had a stop-over in denmark. with the plane flying so low over denmark you could see all the windmills just off the coast, rows and rows of them, and i thought it looked awesome!

i suppose you find coolling towers more attractive?

anyways, wind powered generators are not the solution, they are imply part of the solution. we should be looking into using all kinds of clean energy sources, from wind, to sun, to ethanol and hydrogen fuel cells.

fuck oil and coal. they're so primitive. view post

Do you believe a God exists? posted 17 March 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionDo you believe a God exists? by gierra, Sorcerer-of-Rank

i really can;t be bothered to read through 8 pages of this, so i'll just leave my bit...

i believe in god, but not as some being, but as a force of energy that gave us life. everything has a cause and effect, so if life began on this planet, there had to be something to cause it.

i'm pretty vehemently anti-christians*, and i find it hilarious when others think this is simply a rebellion, that it's 'cool' to not be christian. which i don't buy for a moment. i was never baptised, i've neve rgone to church in my life (aside from weddings and funerals) and i was never brought up to believe in such things.

*i'd like to add that i'm not necessarily against christianity itself. it seems like a good enough religion, in theory. no worse than any other. but somewhere along the lines, its believers messed it up and started killing in the name of their meek and gentle lord. i cannot believe in something that people have used for such atrocities. i also know many good hearted christians who are willing to allow others their freedom to believe what they want. others, preach and evangelize and it makes me sick. view post

i think i'm more sad that it's finished and i can;t read it anymore. this is the first book(s) that i've truly fallen in love with the characters. they are so like real people to me, that i just want to know more, i want to know everything that heppens to them for the rest of their lives.

i miss them already. view post
