I'm torn with this. It seems that the Consult (who are quite involved with the Outside, correct?) have no clue as to who or what the Dunyain are (this idea comes from the very ending of TWP). So, why would the Outside know something that the Consult didn't. I guess, as unJon is suggesting, that the Outside drew Mekertrig to the area so he'd run across Kellhus and report back to the Consult that someone new and powerful had arisen?
Now, I could just be talking out of my backside, or totally misremembering the books. (It's happened before, once, twice, 1,000 times. )
view post
Hi, Xray!!! Nice to see some more ASOIAF people over here.
I think you are misremembering the connection between the Outside and the Inchoroi. The Inchoroi are waging war against the Outside in order to shut it out of Earwa so that they are not damned. The Outside represent the higher beings of Earwa (gods or God or whatever), and Kellhus [i:295b93cv]might[/i:295b93cv] be some true prophet so that some Outside agency could take an interest in his actions.
[/quote:295b93cv]
I feared as much -- I haven't even started on my re-read yet (trying to blast through a ton of new books, thus don't have time). And thanks for the welcome. Looks like I am going to have to make PoN my "subway" read, and keep my new books for my "home" reads, just to get enough reading done in a short period.

Mad BSG fan. Well, OK -- I like Firefly better. There are some similarities between the Cylon and the Consult -- but I think it's only superficial. **************SPOILERS***************** OK -- for those who don't watch if often. There is a distinct current of insurrection among the humano-cylons. Caprica Six, Sharon (Eight, but not Boomer) and the Dean Stockwell character all adhere to doctrine not originally intended by the Cylons (e.g. let the humans live). Also, Gina (Pegasus Six) killed herself (there's much speculation as to why, as suicide is frowned upon in Cylon-land). In all, there is much strife amongst the Cylons and humano-cylons that we haven't seen yet amongst the Consult/Inchoroi/etc. I'll be interested to see how things develop in AE.... ...and, for that matter, in next season of BSG. view post

So, the Hugo Noms have been announced: [url:grqxm6s9]http://www.emcit.com/hugo_section.php?nom.htm[/url:grqxm6s9].
The weirdness? Neil Gaiman's [u:grqxm6s9]Anansi Boys[/u:grqxm6s9] is not on there. It was not the most awesome book of 2005, to be sure, but Gaiman has a much broader audience (and hence more chances to make it onto a ballot) than most.
Of course, [u:grqxm6s9]TWP[/u:grqxm6s9] isn't on there either (bastards), but I can only bribe so many people (like, one) before it starts cutting into my food budget.
Other interesting news: AFFC was nominated, which would make this the second year running that fantasy didn't get the middle finger from the voters. (last year, JS&MN walked away with the rocketship).

Thinking back to Kellhus's character early in his dealings with society at large, he does come across as strangely neuter, although this may be a result of no on-screen interactions (IIRC) with women until Serwe. I'll pay more attention to this as I re-read the books. But I am not sure that Esmenet's promotion to spymaster can be used to infer the role of women in the Dunyain. Spying, whispers and such, I think, would be seen as emasculating (for the Inrithi) and inefficient (for Kellhus, who seems to prefer the "personal touch" when it comes to manipulating events.) Essentially, spying could be viewed as "women's work." view post

We seem to be in the middle of another round of "discuss PoN" at another board I frequent. As far as the "treatment of women" issue goes -- that's rather difficult to dissociate from, say, a reader's own experience. Because while it's relatively rare to come across someone who's experienced the horror of armed conflict, it's quite easy to find a person (male or female) who's the victim of sexual violence. Even if one hasn't been victimized in such a manner, it's very prevalent in almost any female reader's mind. I don't get the vehemence of some readers pro or con a certain series. All of them are worthy in their own right, even if it's not to a reader's taste. I mean, it ain't Goodkind.. view post
But then again some people really do have a problem stepping outside of their own little picture of the world full of snuggly pink bunnies to look at things from a different angle [/quote:2rzqy9wp]
Well, some do. But the readers who object to the portrayal of female characters in PoN in the places I frequent...I know for a fact that some of them are not coming from the fluffy bunny standpoint at all. They're men and women who have been raped or the victims of sexual violence and have some problem dissociating their experience from what they see on the page.
I happen to love PoN, but I can understand their reservations about the brutality. It hits a bit too close to home. As for the pollyannas...not so much sympathy. Earwa is a miserable place.

I rather think the problem of Feast was lack of plot progression.
But on the ASoIaF boards I've seen it done the other way around, with Erikson being denounced as a pre-school writer incapable of forming a coherent sentence, let alone a plot, and Bakker being hailed as the greatest event in fantasy since greek mythology.[/quote:383zfbxz]
True, and very true.
AFFC was by far my least favorite of the ASOIAF series, although in context I found it to be a worthy and enjoyable "end of slaughter" book. Some readers don't want to read about that shit (the picking up the pieces) and would rather fast forward to the vengeance bits.
I haven't read Erikson, although I plan to. In any case, the hyperbole on both sides can be amusing. I may have to stop lampooning Goodkind fans and move to more fertile ground...

Sympathy pains for Gierra, Curethan and Zarathustra. Oh, I have been there, all of them (except the meth, that is). Curethan and Gierra, I think I revisted my hangover just from reading your posts. In any case: 1) I am done with the tequila forevah, 2) I'm laying low on the EtOH front for awhile, 3) Kal knows the score, for he is all-knowledgable on booze, 4) cheep whiskey will kill moose and 5) I am surprised (well, sort-of) at the LLL antipathy. LOL. Next up, Time Bandits, The Hunger and Liquid Sky! view post

But what the heck, I'll give Mystar a smooch. We both like Goodkind's books, if for very different reasons.

First of all, congratulations on your successful recovery. And big ups to having good friends who will provide you with distraction during such a crappy time. That you could take something positive from your experience and turn it into a life-anchor is great (and I love the tattoo you got. Very cool looking). Finally, welcome to the boards. view post

I bit the bullet. I'm reading [u:7dtq0zyj]Gardens of the Moon[/u:7dtq0zyj] by Erikson.
There's a whole lot of Tupac vs. Biggie Smalls-style hate going on between Bakker fans and Erikson fans over at Westeros, and I guess I prefer to be at least mildly informed before I'll hand out beatdowns. I've vowed to read GotM and Deadhouse Gates (seems to be a general consensus that things get way better after the first book) before I'll make the final call, but I gotta admit, I am fucking BORED TO TEARS by GotM thus far.
To take the edge off, I'm also reading Gene Wolfe.
Finally, I'm reading 5 different cookbooks for an article I have to write in August. Nothing worse than perusing recipes from the French Laundry when you've skipped lunch.

I don't think I've seen anyone there arguing about it - they all think both series are great. I've started Mark Z Danielewski's [i:1vquiak3]House of Leaves[/i:1vquiak3], and seven chapters in, I can say it's pretty damn good.[/quote:1vquiak3] House of Leaves is great. I think the animosity comes from Westeros being a Martin forum (i.e. not dedicated to either Bakker or Erikson) and it attracts a somewhat different style of reader. I'm also noticing that many of the women either hate both writers, or love to hate Bakker in particular (this is, of course, not universal -- I mean, I'm here, as is Tol and gierra and at least a few other XX bearers). Finally, we (generally) don't pit Martin against other writers in threads -- there's no point because anyone who's there is at least tangentially interested in ASOIAF. OTOH, if someone were to start a Bakker vs. Martin thread at Malazan, you might see similar levels of bitching that we see at Westeros. Anyway, just a few half-baked thoughts. (and GotM is getting...more interesting. thank the gods.) view post
Vellum by Hal Duncan City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff VanderMeer Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy view post
Yeah -- that's about all I've heard, too. And I think if anything had changed, somebody would have spilled the beans by now. Maybe Scott finally discovered the Cursing Singularity (motherfucker!), where there's so much swearing in a single book that it folds in on itself and disappears from the visible universe. view post
I'll be interested what you think of Erikson. I am not impressed with his writing, although he finally created an interesting character in Felisin. I swore to the Erikson fans at Westeros that I'd read thru DHG, and I will. After that, though, I don't think I'm going to continue the series. I guess it comes down to what you're looking for in books. Nifty battles and cool world-buidling, with uber-1337 characters who never die? Multiple non-human races who do cool shit? Magic, magic, even more magic. It's magic all the way dow? Erikson is your man. Structured narrative, character development and an inspired command of the written or spoken word (while also delivering the goods when it comes to world-building flava, etc -- what we read this stuff for in the first place)? Find another author, because that is definitely not Erikson's forte. He does do blood well, though. Maybe not Cormac McCarthy levels of blood, but he's better than most. I dunno -- I can certainly see why others like the books. view post

I just got back from WorldCon and am predictably brain-fried. But I'll try to get a list together for ya. A warning should go with Vellum, though. It's a love or hate book depending on how one feels about narrative gymnastics and general wankery. As in: the book is ridiculously high-concept, and your tolerance for those kinds of stunts vs. your interest in the story being told will dictate if you like the book. I have very low tolerance for wankery, but was quite taken by the story and some of the themes in Vellum. It was touch and go for awhile, though. I very nearly landed in the hate column. view post
the book is about, well, the World of Ice and Fire. Maps of Westeros, the Free Cities, the Summer Isles, etc. Heraldry and myths and legends. It's a companion book to the series, not a prequel or sequel or even an alternate universe. Also, there are a couple websites to check. www.westeros.org (has basically everything about ASOIAF, including the So Spake Martin threads which compile everything Martin's ever said about the books at signings, at cons, at dinner, over drinks, etc) www.georgerrmartin.com the mo'fficial site. view post
I've heard love for Janny Wurts. I would recommend Gene Wolfe's The Books of the New Sun. Some great writing in there. Also some people love Greg Keyes (Blood Knight, etc.) view post

the mighty puissance of the moderator!!! (I just got made a mod at Westeros, and am still drunk on my awesome powers. or perhaps that's gin?) view post
noodles -- gods, that's kind of a tall order. But I can try: the story is about the torturer's travels up the river and (eventually) to his great destiny. along the way he gets laid, fights, wonders on the nature of a magical stone, and falls in with brigands. He also meets some people, executes others, and battles a gigantic lizard. anyway, the story is really told as a flashback in the waning days (IIRC) of the torturer's life. I highly recommend it, although the prose is somewhat impenetrable to those used to straight-forward description. And there are some nasty surprises in the story along the way... is that sufficiently spoiler-free? view post
