I am currently about 50 pgs from the ends of Midnight Tides, and about halfway through TDTCB.

Both great books! view post

Stephen Erikson's Books posted 01 June 2004 in Literature DiscussionStephen Erikson's Books by The Consult, Candidate

I think the greatest part of the Malazan Books is the ability for you to re-read them several times and still be able to pick up more info each time.

I have read the series through 4 times, and every time there is something that you didn't notice before that gives you a deeper insight into the plot/world etc.... It just leaves you begging for more! view post

Moenghus = Mallahet? posted 10 June 2004 in The Darkness That Comes BeforeMoenghus = Mallahet? by The Consult, Candidate

I believe that Maithanet is part of, or at least allied with the consult. My main reason for this are the deaths of the informers that Achamian was using to gather information. Those 2 deaths were Geshrunni (who was killed by the consult after telling Achamian of the war between the Scarlet spires and the Cishaurim) and Inrau (killed by the consult after spying on the Thousand Temples for Achamian).

Now why would the consult want these 2 informers dead?

So here's my theory...

The consult have been tracking Achamian, (as seen by the skin changer in Momemn) and are trying to prevent him getting any info on the Scarlet Spires and the Thousand Temples...the 2 main factions of the holy war....lead by none other than Maithanet. The consult/Maithanet don't want Akka gettin to the heart of the matter because that very heart is the consult.

Couple this with the fact that Maithanet can see the Few, though Akka cannot see him...and this leads to another mystery, maybe some form of Nonman sorcery?

What comes to mind now though is why doesn't the consult just kill off Akka? Well perhaps Akka is actually too powerful.
There is some evidence to this effect....on pg 490 Eleazaras is reflecting on his meeting with Akka and thinks that Akka would have been able to stop him had he tried to stop the riot with sorcery. He then goes on to think that he had been cowed by a mere Mandate field spy.

Evidence that Akka has a bit more power at his disposal than it seems? view post

Names and Pronunciation posted 11 June 2004 in The Darkness That Comes BeforeNames and Pronunciation by The Consult, Candidate

Hi all

Just thought i'd remark on the rather complex names and pronunciation in TDTCB. I don't think all the hard names are really necessary, and they make the book slightly more difficult to read...

Don't get me wrong, it takes nothing at all away from the story (which is incidentally one of the best i've read:D) but i just find it rather annoying sometimes...having to stop mid-sentence to try and work out the pronunciation. I think my main problem is not be able to understand all the symbols above the vowels....

What do you all think?

Oh, and feel free to explain the pronunciation of some of the harder names if you will view post

Could anyone tell me the release date for WP in Australia?

I think it usually corresponds with the UK release but i'm not too sure.
Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks in advance view post

Currently halfway through Royal Assasin by Robin Hobb.

Great so far (especially the ending of the first book) but it can be a bit slow in some parts...still has enough action, but nothing that really moves the storyline along.

Other than that, it is a very enjoyable read so far.

Anyone read Ian Irvines Three Worlds Cycle? I have ordered the first 2 books, as the series got some good reviews, and he's an aussie like me . Opinions welcome. view post

A Game of Thrones posted 09 July 2004 in Literature DiscussionA Game of Thrones by The Consult, Candidate

Undeniably one of the best fantasy series out there at the moment, with lots of twists, turns and deaths to really keep you guessing. I think a Storm of Swords is my fav in the series so far, followed by A Games of Thrones then a Clash of Kings.

I also love the parallel story lines he has happening at the moment, and i'm really curious as to how these plots will become entwined.

Only one gripe....how loooooooong do we have to wait for Martin to get his act together and finish A Feast for Crows?

Overall though, Martin is definately in my top 5. view post

Hi all.

Thought it would be interesting to see what all your fav series are.
Mine are as follows...

1) Steven Erikson (Malazan Book of the Fallen)
2) R.Scott Bakker (Prince of Nothing)
3) George RR Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire)
4) Robin Hobb (Farseer Trilogy)
5) David Gemmell (Rigante Novels)

Pretty standard list for me....

Special mentions go to RJ (well...for the first 6 WoT books, forget the rest...), Stephen Donaldson and Frank Herbert for his Dune books.

Bye for now! view post

I too cannot seem to be able to re-read these books.... I think it is mainly due to the fact that there is no new info or plot insights to gain by re-reading them.

These books a pretty in-your-face....nothing is left to the imagination.... its just told how it is.... view post

I would have thought there would have to be some actual physical contact between the chorae and magic users for them to have any effect.... view post
