Pixellated Map?!? posted 11 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtPixellated Map?!? by Kingmanor, Candidate

Hello I am new to the forums. I wasn't sure whether to post this in the SPOILER forum or not. I just got a copy of the Thousandfold Thought in at a Barnes & Noble in NYC, and the map of the Western Three Seas, the route of the Holy War, is ridiculously pixellated. The names of cities are obscured and ureadable because of this. But the inset label, saying "The Western Three Seas 4109 Year-of-the-Tusk" is full normal resolution, if u look at it carefully. The complete Earwa map and the Shimeh map are fine. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't have access to a scanner at the moment but I will in a few days, and post a scan of it so u can see exactly what I mean. How did this happen? Should I complain to Overlook? view post

OK here are the scans so you can see for yourself.

Good map from The Warrior Prince, for comparison.:

The Book Title posted 15 February 2006 in The Warrior ProphetThe Book Title by Kingmanor, Candidate

I was aprehensive about the title of the book 2 before I started it. I mean The Darkenss That Comes Before and The Thousandfold Thought are both fantastic names for books, compred with only The Warrior Prophet. But by the end of the book, it became very clear that there was no other title the book could have had. view post

Inchoroi Origins/Aims posted 17 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtInchoroi Origins/Aims by Kingmanor, Candidate

It is crucial the the Inchoroi seal the world because they understand the sins that they have committed leaves them with no possibility of redemption in the Outside. They will never get to Earwa's version of Heaven. But rather than go to Hell, they try to cut off ALL access completely, so they will not be damned.

And yes I would love to know more about where the Inchoroi originally came from. The Nonmen called it the Ark of the Skies, but it didn't just appear, it came from somewhere, probably another planet. What was it like there? Why did they leave? (Perhaps we could get a book series about that world ending with the Inchoroi leaving) Did most of the casualties happen as a direct result of the crash, or was there perhaps some infighting during the ship's voyage?

So much we have yet to know. view post

I think that Achamian will also find the Heron Spear. view post

Inchoroi Origins/Aims posted 17 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtInchoroi Origins/Aims by Kingmanor, Candidate

Achamian explained that Men are the gateways thru which the Gods act on this world, which he exemplified by punching holes in a piece of paper to represent the gateways. I'm not sure why only Men tho, it may be Nonmen too (which would be why the Inchoroi started the war with them in the first place), especially because they can use sorcery.

And why do the Inchoroi only need to exterminate "enough" of the population to seal the world? I would think there would still be some connection to the Outside as long as there is one Man left alive. view post

Pixellated Map?!? posted 17 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtPixellated Map?!? by Kingmanor, Candidate

Yes as I was reading I noticed a lot of weird printing errors here and there. Its like the typeface blocks of an old style printing press were off a bit. But everything is computerized now so I dont understand how that could be. And the map looks like it was messed up on the computer, not on the printer end of things. view post

The No-God posted 18 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe No-God by Kingmanor, Candidate

I do not think the No-God is any kind of a God. I think he a completely artifical creation. No soul, no connection to the outside. He was built on the Inchoroi homeworld and somehow "summoned" to Earwa for the first apocalypse. The books never talk about the No-God's body, or where his Carapace is kept hidden by the Consult, because its not. Its not there. The Heron Spear sent it back where it came from.

I could be completely wrong too. view post

The No-God posted 18 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe No-God by Kingmanor, Candidate

Everything we say here is speculation. I dont think there is near enough information in the Prince of Nothing to correctly ascertain what the No-God truly is.

When we finally learn the secrets of the No-God it will be funny to go back and look at this thread and see how close or how wrong we were.

And it certainly is strange the the most powerful being in Earwa says "WHAT AM I?" view post

The Mandate Skin-Spy posted 18 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe Mandate Skin-Spy by Kingmanor, Candidate

Do you suppose the skin-spy that infiltrated the Mandate had Seswatha's dreams as well? I wonder how that would have affected him and/or the Consult. view post

The Mandate Skin-Spy posted 19 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe Mandate Skin-Spy by Kingmanor, Candidate

Maithanet pretends just as much as Kellhus does. Neither truly believes what they preach. Just a means to an end. view post

Skin-Spies have Souls posted 21 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtSkin-Spies have Souls by Kingmanor, Candidate

I think the question we need to ask is HOW did the mandate skin-spy get the soul. Its my understanding that humans get their souls naturally somwhere between conception and birth. So where did the manufactured skin-spy get his? was it taken from another?

And yes he may have been the only soulled skin-spy, but Aspect-Emperor will be 20 yrs later, and the Consult could create a bunch more by then. view post

Inchoroi Origins/Aims posted 22 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtInchoroi Origins/Aims by Kingmanor, Candidate

There are some FF7 similarities as well. Alien being crashes down. Originally it makes friends with pre-Man worldly inhabitants. They fall out, fight war of attrition, Alien goes back to its landing crater. Years later humans resurrect it looking for power.

After that it differs obviously. I wonder if Scott played the FF games? view post

Mass-Market Paperback posted 22 February 2006 in Author Q & AMass-Market Paperback by Kingmanor, Candidate

There has been a disturbing trend in the Fantasy genre lately that irks me to no end: the disappearence of the mass-market paperback.

Now publishers seem content to supply only trade paperbacks, and they aren't even true trade paperbacks. The layouts, font size, text spacing has not changed at all. I'd rather think of it as a hardcover book with a cheap paperback binding.

Scott, I know you're friends with Steven Erikson, and they pull this crap with his books too. His book 1, Gardens of the Moon, is a nice normal size paperback that quite nicely fits in my jacket pocket. It doesn't even use the cheap thicker pages used to artificially increase the thickness of some other authors books. But since book 1 we have gotten no mass-market paperback. Tor printing a book the size of Memories of Ice and calling that a trade paperback is a disgrace.

If somehow publishers found a way to make a mass-market paperback out of GRRM's Storm of Swords at 1100 pages, then I firmly believe not publishing a smaller word count book in that format is unacceptable.

So Scott I ask you point-blank: Will we ever see the Prince of Nothing in mass-market paperback? view post

Any Wolfe fans? posted 22 February 2006 in Literature DiscussionAny Wolfe fans? by Kingmanor, Candidate

I just started the Book of the New Sun in trade paperback. If they published the Prince of Nothing in typeface as small as Book of the New Sun, it could probably fit in one volume. view post

Mass-Market Paperback posted 22 February 2006 in Author Q & AMass-Market Paperback by Kingmanor, Candidate

rycanada: After reading your reply I took a look at Amazon.ca, and apparently there is a Canadian mass-market paperback (though I cannot find any evidence of a Canadian trade paperback of any edition). This makes it even more ridiculous that in the USA we only get enourmous trade paperbacks.

So I revise my original question. Scott, will we ever see the Prince of Nothing in mass-market paperback in the United States? view post

Looking thru Amazon.ca I found the french edition of TDTCB with a completely different cover than the english editions. But I cannot seem to figure out which character it is on the cover. Who is it?

The Mandate Skin-Spy posted 22 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe Mandate Skin-Spy by Kingmanor, Candidate

What? With everything we have seen in this trilogy what makes you possibly think a skin-spy COULD kill Kellhus? With all his power he will somehow be replaced by a tekne'd creation? Gimme a break. The is zero evidence supporting that possibility.

And considering the Prince of Nothing was about, well, the prince of nothing, what makes you think the Aspect Emperor will NOT have the POV of the aspect-emperor?

Main characters dying is one thing. Main characters replaced by subhuman creations that the entire three-seas knows about and NO ONE NOTICING is absolutely ridiculous. I cannot believe you even consider it. view post

What should we have anticipated? posted 22 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtWhat should we have anticipated? by Kingmanor, Candidate

Every fantasy series starts out with assumptions that later prove to be wrong:

LoTR: Frodo will be able to withstand the power of the Ring.
WoT: The male half of the One Source will be forever tainted.
aSoIaF: Stannis Baratheon with his Lightbringer is Azor Ahai reborn.

Just because things change later on doesn't suddenly mean every rule is fair game to be broken. I think its fair to say the legitimate rules of Earwa are spelled out in the Encyclopedic Glossary at the end of TTT, not what certain characters may have thought earlier than that.

Also, the skin-spy is a non-sourcerous artifact in the sense that it was not created with sorcery, it was molded using the Tekne. A Chorae is a sorcerous arifact. Even the Mandate skin-spy was created with Tekne, not with Gnosis. Practicing sorcery has nothing to do with how the skin-spy was created in the first place. view post

Mass-Market Paperback posted 23 February 2006 in Author Q & AMass-Market Paperback by Kingmanor, Candidate

Sorry rycanada I only have the "face" trade paperback from the US, not the gray cover. I'm still not sure who's face it is. Maybe its the same guy who's on the cover of the french edition (see my other Author Q)

Selfnoise I understand the appeal of trade paperbacks, and I have nothing against them in and of themselves. I only dislike when they are basically photocopies of the original hardcover, and when no mass-market paperback is released after them.

Basically most of my reading is done on my commute to work by train and subway. I'd rather have a smaller book that can fit in my pocket and be easily held open with one hand, rather than some huge book whose flimsy binding cannot support its own weight. view post

Yes I totally agree the face on the US trade paperbacks is the same person.

So we have a character on the cover of multiple versions of the book, and we can't figure out who he is. WTF kind of design choice is that? view post

Cishaurim explanation posted 03 March 2006 in Author Q & ACishaurim explanation by Kingmanor, Candidate

Remember what happened to Moenghus. When he got to Shimeh he impressed everyone with his Dunyain skills so they thought he would be a good Cishaurim. But when he got blinded, he realized he lacks much of his Dunyain abilities without his eyes, and his Dunyain abilities are based on reason and intellect and not your heart, so he didn't make that good of a Cishaurim at all. He would have been much better at the Gnosis. So he knew he had to send his son to learn it on the way. view post
