Books that have induced a mindfuck posted 19 August 2005 in Literature DiscussionBooks that have induced a mindfuck by Lucimay, Subdidact

weelll....when i was 19, lo these many years ago, i decided i should read freud. don't know why i thought this but i did.
i read six volumes of collected papers. THAT was a serious mindfuck.

and (dweeb that i am) when i first read King's Salem's Lot, that scared the crap outa me. kindof a mindfuck. (that was the year it was published, once again, many years ago)

haven't read any "mindfucking" literature lately.

(i've used this adjective too many times now, haven't i)

oh..i just thought of something more recent, anyone else read The Angle Quickest for Flight by Steven Kotler? That was a bit bizarre. view post

Starring "Insert Actor Here" as Kelhuss! posted 02 September 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionStarring "Insert Actor Here" as Kelhuss! by Lucimay, Subdidact

at risk of life and limb i MUST stridently disagree with the (and i use this term loosely) actors being mentioned, folks!
i love each and everyone of you but come on...
liam neeson?? daniel day lewis??? matthew mcconaughey??argh! this is NOT a line-up of film's finest! might as well ask brad and colin to join the party! wait, farrel might be alright...guy has range and potential.

(and i guess i'd better, quick like a bunny, insert the only my opinion disclaimer, now!)

maybe i was a bit off the mark with Chow Yun Fat...okay, i have a little crush , but please...

mcconaughey can't act his way out of a paper bag!!!
rachel weisz is good but not old enough to play esmenet altho she might well do for serwe...and sexy is an attitude weisz can most certainly muster. these complex characters deserve actors with depth, not hollywood's flavor of the month! (crap, i'm ranting now aren't i, sorry )
well...i just couldn't help it...
and having said all that, i don't really have better notions about casting this thing, i'd just like to see these characters take on some life rather than consign it to blockbuster mentality, ya know?
so maybe unknowns are best.
ok...all done now. view post

The problem of evil posted 02 September 2005 in Philosophy DiscussionThe problem of evil by Lucimay, Subdidact

I think the most interesting experiment I can possibly think of would be the simple act of asking another intelligent species (created by us or naturally occurring) whether they had a sense of good and evil.

there you go Echoex, Spacey with that look he had on his face all through Usual Suspects...yeah, he could do Achamian i think

and how 'bout Ralph Finnes as Ikurei Xerius? he does that mewling and puking thing pretty well and somebody like Helen Mirren or Glen Close as the Empress, both of them can do that evil-streak a mile wide very well...

maybe Miranda Richardson could do Esmenet, she's got that world weariness about her

there's a Native American actor that might work for Cnaiur, David Midthunder...he's beefy, broods well, and can be menacing, altho he's a bit young for Cnaiur (who is 44!) an maybe a bit too good-looking

i'm still thinkin on Kellhus, Proyas, Sarcellus, Conphas and Xinemus (i'll get back to you on that! )

and once again, please forgive my outburst but there have been so many novels that utterly FAILED as films due to horrifying casting, King's The Stand and It are two that stand out in my mind...and what about Gary Sinise and John Malkovich in Of Mice and Men? just a tragedy!! view post

no harm in a wish list tho' and its fun..
i like the Clive Owen idea too, tho' for some reason Chow Yun Fat is still stuck in my head as a Kellhus...is that too far left field? i still think Zhang Yimou could accomplish the film too. he has a Kurosawa-like vision and an excellent sense of how to make fantasy convincing.
once again, no harm in speculating,

i wish somebody, ANYBODY had speculated a bit more before casting "The Stand"!!!!!!!!! (still steamin' over Sinise and Ringwald and not about to get over it!! )

What happens when your soul leaves your body? posted 06 September 2005 in Philosophy DiscussionWhat happens when your soul leaves your body? by Lucimay, Subdidact

i'm just thinking about energy...

i'm under the impression that energy can't be destroyed, only converted to another kind of energy...is that correct?

if that's correct, where does my "energy" go? or does the body just stop "making" the energy?

i wouldn't mind my body being food for worms, and the worms food for birdies, and the birdies food for whatever else and so on...that sounds good, it's just the whole "soul/energy" thing i can't get my head around.

and...honestly...i don't WANT to cease to be. i don't care if my body dies, i just don't want whatever minimal info and experience i have acquired to be chucked just because i wasn't creative enough or had enough drive while alive to figure out a way to share it (for whatever its worth!)
is that selfish? delusional?
i don't know. i guess you start to think about this stuff more seriously the further down the road you get without having produced offspring!!! view post

What happens when your soul leaves your body? posted 08 September 2005 in Philosophy DiscussionWhat happens when your soul leaves your body? by Lucimay, Subdidact

However, I probably wouldn't define mind and personality as energy. Rather, as the way your energy is ordered and stored. Information contained in matter. And that information, your knowledge and personality, can be lost if the system that sustains it fails.

So, your body's "energy" remains, in different forms. But that's just the bits and pieces we're made of. What we see as the "self"; memory, personality, talents, desires... that just ceases to have meaning as soon as the body dies. Nothing remains to show it ever existed, save the memories of others and the things we wrought in life.

ok...that's tidy. if this is the case, i'd better get on the stick and figure out a way to instruct you all in the ways of rightousness!!! view post

Movies...? posted 28 September 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionMovies...? by Lucimay, Subdidact

(syl has incited me out of my lethargy)

anyone seen any good flicks lately??
hit us with some reviews...

tonight i saw David Cronenberg's new film "The History of Violence"

you don't actually HAVE to be a Cronenberg fan to see this film, but having seen one or two will probably add to the experience.
as a woman i usually avoid Cronenberg. Dead Ringers (twin gynecologists inventing torturous gynecological instruments!!) was over the top creepy even for Cronenberg (who gave us Shivers and Scanners).
this newest film is the story of an american family and like his compatriots Romero, Craven, Hooper, and Carpenter, Cronenberg definately has things to point out about that family, and about perception and the nature of "reality".
as big a Viggo Mortensen fan as i am, i am not sure he was right for this role. he delivers but there is something stilted about his performance. if you see it, maybe you can put your finger on it for me. Maria Bello, however, is steller!! She is fully believable every minute of screentime.
Ashton Holmes is also very good as the son.
An archtypical story of mistaken identity, the script was spare (and loosely based on John Wagner's graphic novel); lots of silent screen time, and at moments so spare as to be cliche, which gives this viewer the impression that Cronenberg is more interested in what's happening between and to the characters than what might be said in the moment.
There is explicit sex and violence, signature Cronenberg devices for commentary, and they work well.
Nuff said, I liked it and would recommend it.

here's an interview with Cronenberg about it.
