Holy war: the ultimate blasphemy posted 19 January 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionHoly war: the ultimate blasphemy by Harrol, Moderator

The Biblical definition for holiness is to be set aside exclusively for the purpose of God. That in mind people who were called of God and ordered to go to war by Him and did so with the right heart and mind would be considered holy men. Their purpose would be holy and the war would holy. What about the point that killing is bad? How can God order such an evil act? It is simply a matter of purpose and perspective. God has ultimate authority and judgement, therefore He has the right to order death and war. I on the other hand am just a man with selfish motives and purposes that are evil. There is no way that any murder or war that I could cause would be holy. view post

The Dream that went wrong posted 16 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe Dream that went wrong by Harrol, Moderator

My understanding is that Sethwatha would not let him speak even under torture. That is why Iyokos said that none of the dozen or so Mandate that were tortured ever revealed the gnosis. That Mandate have no choice after touching Seswatha's heart they are in some way bound by him. view post

The No-God posted 19 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtThe No-God by Harrol, Moderator

One point I found interesting about the no-god was at the end of The Warrior Prophet. Systhenese(sp) brother was asked by that tribes man if he was the no-god. His reaction was as if he had been paid the highest compliment ever. Does anyone else think that this may be a clue as to whether or not the no-god is a creation of the Inchoroi or just something they found. view post

Questions regarding Conphas posted 25 February 2006 in The Thousandfold ThoughtQuestions regarding Conphas by Harrol, Moderator

I believe that the the reason Conphas died is because the army and the imperial sorcerers lost faith in him. Well how is that? One point that was spoken of several times in the last two books. No one had lost more sons to the Fanimiry that the empire had. So here the empire's ancient enemy is on the ropes on the verge of complete destruction and Conphas tells his army let's go destroy our fellow men of the tusk and save our ancient foe. That is not going to fly with his army so therefor they betrayed him at the moment of his greatest need. view post

Do you believe a God exists? posted 16 May 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionDo you believe a God exists? by Harrol, Moderator

I would have to say that i believe in God. At the same time I do not think that there is any physical proof of God. God is to be discovered in other ways from our physical senses. view post

What I really liked about the series is cnauir's observations of Kellhus manipulating people. I also found it funny when he called Akka a woman hearted baffoon. By the way i really like Akka but it was still funny. view post

I know this has been stated before and I agree with the thought. Akka will be the Seswatha of the second apocalypse. That is my belief at least. view post

Victory! posted 09 June 2006 in Off-Topic DiscussionVictory! by Harrol, Moderator

I have gotten three people to read the series over the last year. I must admit it is hard to do because the second you say it is fantasy people try to get all sophisticated. You would think that a good book with an awesome plot and message would be accepted no matter the genre. Oh well some people will not know what they are missing. view post

Terry Goodkind engages in rape fantasy? posted 13 June 2006 in Literature DiscussionTerry Goodkind engages in rape fantasy? by Harrol, Moderator

One thing that I would like to add is there are a lot of critics on the board, which is not a bad thing. Not as an attack on what Mystar stated about the people on this board attacking Mr. Goodkind is not really true. I write that because there are 740 registered members and only a handful have actually said anything bad about Mr. Goodkind and some people even defended him to some extent. Personally I have read the series all the way to The Pillars of Creation. Pretty soon I will pick up the series and finish it because I have come to far not to. If you enjoy the series great if not great. view post

Truthfully the guy just wanted a cheaper room. I seriously doubt that he truly feels entitled to a better rate. I believe he was hoping that you would feel he was entitled to a cheaper rate. Some people are always shopping for a bargain and will say whatever to get that bargain. view post

Jus to see where peoples opinions are coming from. Im sure people who have noone close to them in the armed forces are goin to have different opinions than someone who does personally I think anyone who has served his nation should be treated as royalty regardless if the war was the right thing to do.

Well WP I look forward to you treating me like royalty I served for six years in the Navy and will be joining the National Guard here shortly. Seriously I do not expect special treatment but of course I was never where the Iraqi's could shoot at me. I will say that floating around the Persian Gulf in 120 degree weather is no fun and the occasional harassment by the Irainians is annoying. The way I see it is this. If somone wants to show special consideration to military people then great and if not great. view post

The problem of evil posted 22 June 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionThe problem of evil by Harrol, Moderator

I read most of the posts here already and felt the need to add my two cents. Forgive me if my write up is not as well thought out as Randall, Peter or Will. According to my beliefs God created both good and He created evil. That is stated in the book of Isaiah. From a non philisophical stand point good is good because God defines it as such and evil is evil again because God said so. I do dissagree with the thought that God does these things based off of whims. God is not whimsical at all. Another thought is if God is good then why is there evil. My understanding is that God does not want automatons but people who choose Him and His ways willingly. view post

I believe the second holy war will be led by Kellhus against the consult and the no-god. I do not think the consult has faced crazed religious fanatics yet view post

Esmet's betrayl, Bakker's massogeny, and a criticism posted 24 July 2006 in The Warrior ProphetEsmet's betrayl, Bakker's massogeny, and a criticism by Harrol, Moderator

.

If I was living in the Three Seas, I just might be a whore too. It is a hard place to live. This is not about what the woman could or couldn't do...it was about what she MUST do. Yes she is weak and seemingly betrays the latest lover to take up the next strongest guy that comes along for security, but so does every woman. You only need to look around at the majority of the women who inhabit the news or even your neighborhoods to see that every woman is looking for security as every man is looking for adoration. This scene is played out by every woman who stays with an abusive or degenerate man just because he is security. Even when the woman is supporting said slacker who lays passed out on the couch from whatever vile potion he consumed, she will still stay because to leave him would to be to give up on her dream of finding Prince Charming behind the Toad she first kissed and to step out into the terrifying concrete jungle alone.

If Bakker is writing about his critique of every woman, then he is also writing about every man...the eternal lust for power and war and to dominate the women in his path and to overcome the perceived weakness of himself. Again, look only as far as today's headlines to see every manner of man conquering some foe, whether on a field of war or of sport. From the Emperor to Akka, you can see the self doubt that every man longs to have resolved for him, either by his accomplishments or his woman or lover...his prize. Maybe also he even touches on a homosexual fantasy that many men fear, that in even the sexual preference there might be a weakness.

You have missed the scope of Bakker's writing.....yes, he writes of himself but he also places all of humanity into his reflections of himself.

I agree with this by and large with the exceptions to a woman's point of view due to the fact that I am not a woman. Bakker is writing a critique of humanity in a medival time period. view post

AMERICAN POLITICS... posted 28 July 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionAMERICAN POLITICS... by Harrol, Moderator

Liberals and conservatives both use the bully pulpit and propaganda. The liberals have mainstream media and the conservatives have the more popular talk show hosts. What irratates me the most is we seldom debate issues any more before we run quickly into defamation of character and shaming of people. i do not mean this in context to this board but general American and even world politics. One fear and shaming tactic used a lot in America is the term intolerant. Most that use that term do not even use it right. It is not intolerance to disagree and think something is wrong. Intolerance is to physically and verbally be uncivil and violent. People that use the intolerant stick because you disagree with them are wrong. You can only have tolerance if there are disagreeing parties. If everyone agrees there is no tolerance because everyone is on the same side. I find that those that proclaim themselves tolerant and say those that disagree with them are intolerant are actually the intolerant one because through embarasment and shaming they try to silence the other opposing veiws. view post

War in Lebanon posted 31 July 2006 in Philosophy DiscussionWar in Lebanon by Harrol, Moderator

i admit that i'm mostly ignorant on the issue, as i try to avoid watching the news these days, but from what i've seen, i'm not sure this is true. any time that i do hear something, it's about how isreals rockets hit a hospital, or a school, or so on.

either way, both sides are at fault, so as far as i'm concerned, they can bomb the hell out of eachother.

Do not worry Gierra they most certainly will. This fight needs to be able to reach its conclusion which appears to be the destruction of Hezbollah. The international force sent there will lack the fortitude to truely keep the peace. view post
