Too funny. Going to steal that and post it elsewhere if you don't mind.

Personally, I fancy myself a philosopher or a kung fu master, but I imagine most people do. I can easily see myself falling into other categories, as well. Profundus Maximus, especially. Let's see... atheist, blowhard, centurion, ideologue, lamer, and maybe others. view post

Starring "Insert Actor Here" as Kelhuss! posted 01 September 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionStarring "Insert Actor Here" as Kelhuss! by Scilvenas, Auditor

Let me preface my post by saying we're all entitled to our opinions, and there's nothing that would make my opinion any better than yours.

But in my opinion... Jessica Alba as Serwe? Are you serious? I don't have the books, and I'm not one for that kind of detail, but I could swear Serwe is blonde and fair. Besides which, Alba simply cannot act. Saying she's a bad actress gives her too much credit, mainly by implying that she's an actress, not just a model with lines. Now, if you're saying you want to see her brutalized simply because she's so horrible, then I'm all for it.

Might as well nominate Keanu Reeves for Proyas and Dolph Lundgren as Cnaur. view post

I'm a big Donaldson fan, Rider. I've mentioned him a couple times around here. And if you haven't done so yet, I recommend you check out http://kevinswatch.ihugny.com .

I'm in the same boat as everyone else when it comes to Jordan. Stopped buying his books years ago. Now I just check them out from the library when a new one comes out, and that's just so I can finish the damn thing. view post

Fine, that's the new topic. What are you so busy doing that you can't be bothered to post pointless s*** on the board?

List 'Em - Bands posted 27 September 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionList 'Em - Bands by Scilvenas, Auditor

If there's any kind of thread that people will respond to, it's the dreaded list (even if it's already been done before several times, which it might have been). And since music seems to be about the only thing going these days...

So top five

1. Clutch
2. Queens of the Stone Age
3. Tool
4. Pelican
5. Alice in Chains

Honorable Mentions:

A Perfect Circle, Bad Religion, Calexico, Dredg, Failure, GnR, Metallica, Tom Waits, Ween view post

Movies...? posted 28 September 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionMovies...? by Scilvenas, Auditor

Never got the whole Sideways thing. Working in a video store when it came out, I found there were only two types of people. Those who love the movie and those who hate it (there was even one woman who came in and demanded a refund because it was too vulgar... despite the warnings on the back of the display box). *shrug* I love wine, but other than a few funny moments, the movie did nothing for me. None of the characters in the film gave me much reason to either empathize with them or find them interesting. Great performances, even if I don't agree with the director's love of Giamatti. view post

You should be afraid... very, very, afraid. posted 31 October 2005 in Author Q & AYou should be afraid... very, very, afraid. by Scilvenas, Auditor

First, the obligatory Fight Club quote:

All a gun does is focus an explosion in one direction. You have a class of young strong men and women, and they want to give their lives to something. Advertising has these people chasing cars and clothes they don't need. Generations have been working in jobs they hate, just so they can buy what they don't really need.

Second, Echoex, when you say caveat emptor, that people should make their own rational decisions, stand up for themselves, well... isn't that what Scott is doing? But instead of responding to each individual ad, he's responding to the tactic. Even more to the point, the response is in response to previous generations of advertisements. I'm sure you're aware that some ads have adverse reactions (for example, the gubernatorial race here in VA took a turn for the worse recently when the Republican candidate argued a bit too fervently for the death penalty), so advertising has already predisposed a decent segment of the population to this position.

I know it's in your best interest to promote a general bonhomie for advertising, but you appear, to me, to be saying that the only valid reaction to advertising is a positive or null one. Even if there was some small print at the end of an ad saying something to the effect of "this ad made with neurocasting technology" (wasn't a similar kind of warning proposed for genetically modified foods?), the truth of the situation is that the advantage of resources is still overwhelmingly in the corporate court. The balancing factor is the one of personal choice, and if efforts are made to circumvent that... view post

Was Cnauir gay? posted 13 December 2005 in The Thousandfold ThoughtWas Cnauir gay? by Scilvenas, Auditor

I was thinking along the same lines as kansasbarbarian. I don't remember anywhere in the books it said Cnaur and Moenghus had sex (and the fact that he was shocked anyone would think so leads me to believe they didn't... not to mention Scott doesn't seem very hesitant to describe sexual details). I wouldn't rule it out, but I also wouldn't count it as conclusive evidence he's gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) even if he did. I mean, a woman can have a fling with another woman, but if it's a one time thing, people don't usually consider her a lesbian.

Besides, anything physical between the two would be the least important dynamic between them, I think. There's no doubt that Cnaur loved Moenghus, I just don't think he did in that way. Defining it in any particular kind of way would probably be too simple. More of a homo crush, if anything. He certainly couldn't have felt anything similar to what he did for his main wife, even if the one was greater.

In short, I seriously don't believe he's gay in the way we think of it. view post
