What is your favorite sport? posted 17 August 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionWhat is your favorite sport? by Alric, Auditor

To steal from the old EA Sports ads... sport is when you can say, "I am better than you, and I can prove it."

I think "sport" can be defined differently by just about anyone who you'd ask. I prefer a more general definition myself. Sport is where through physical skill, a person or team, is competing against other persons or teams. These might be decided by judges rewarding performance, by scores achieved directly against another. Now, this definition leaves a certain grey margin in the middle where people can certainly argue. Is darts a sport or a bar room entertainment? Why the heck does ESPN carry poker tournaments? What was that trampoline competition at the last olympics?

For me, figure skating is a sport. Anything that is that physically demanding, precise and requires that much time and talent to perfect is a sport. The wonderful thing, you don't have to agree with me because there are plenty of sports out there for everyone. Heck, follow the wonderful Ashes this summer. view post

target: yes, judges/refs etc. have an impact on the game and even an influence over who wins and loses...but ultimately it is decided between the people on the field/surface/whatever. In figure skating there is always controversy over a judge giving someone a higher score or lower score for whatever reason (ie bribes, their own country, etc.). That has a 100% direct impact on the result because no matter how good the people perform the judge can still say "no, I didn't like it."

Take hockey for example. In the Women's Olympic final a ways back it was the USA and Canada for the gold and the referee was CLEARLY biased in favor of the Americans. Handing out penalties right, left, and, believe it or not, centre. Did the referee get to arbitrarily decide the outcome of the game? No. The Canadians won despite the bias. That is what makes it a sport IMO. The fact that despite external forces the players themselves are the ones responsible for the outcome of the game.

Just so you know the only reason this came up is I have a friend who does trampoline and calls her kids she coaches "athletes" and we made fun of her and told her it wasn't a sport. It evolved from there and now I actually half believe it. view post

Yeah, well i was only being pedantic really with teh judges, but i can't totally agree with you but i can see your point.

The Ashes is awesome and its good to know we have some Americans watching Although bleeding Aussies drawing the third test, grrrrr. Bloody northern weather, it always has to rain, they should restrict the cricket to Edgbaston because Birmingham opperates on its own moni-climate, and i can watch it live Anyways, let's just see what Trent Bridge brings us, its back in the Midlands so we might just see a full 5 days cricket.

My housemate is playing on International Cricket Captain 2005 right now, and losing hilariously, so if you will excuse me, i have to laugh...a lot. view post

I have two favorites: NASCAR and football.

I follow Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in NASCAR. I can't get enough of it. Sadly, he hasn't done so well this season, but he'll be back next year.

I also follow the Buffalo Bills and the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Bills will probably have an OK season. They'll probably lose games they're expected to lose. They're rebuilding now after getting rid of Bledsoe, who really didn't give me much hope as he's getting close to being a has-been. We've got Losman now, who we can build a team around. And Virginia Tech is now the third ranked team in college football. Even if they stay at #3 and win out, I don't think they'll have a chance at a title shot unless USC or Texas goes down hard (though it's unlikely). USC would have to lose two games and Texas would probably drop in rank if they lost one, depending on who they lost to.

College football is so much more interesting to me than the NFL. They've got a great OT system.

OK, that's it. view post

I'm surprised that on a fantasy site no one mentioned fencing. I've been involved in the sport for almost 14 years (on and off). Personally I enjoy Epee, which is a long sharp piece of hard steel and is used in the context of - I get you before you get me. That's the main rule and it is fierce. Same as martial arts, the sport of one-on-one competition for your own life is intense. Think chess at 90 MPH adreniline roaring speed. view post

I think my favorite sport is Mixed Martial Arts. Martial Arts at it's best. But I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Japan has a better organization called Pride Fighting Championships. True pure martial artists compete here, and it's usually a lot more spectacular an event.

In the UFC, you have Renato Sobral - pretty good striker, pretty good grappler.

Pride has, for example, Ricardo Arona. The best grappler in the world right now, but terrible striker.

The saying, 'Jack of all trades, master of none' comes up often when discussing the difference. view post

i watch any sport, except curling and golf coz they're boring to watch.

any thoughts on the Final Four? who do you think will win it all? i really like LSU right now, but my heart goes to cinderella-team Mason.

as for my faves, i like football-football(or soccer) and american football. gotta love the NFL. view post

I played hockey from the time I was about 6 or so, but haven't played much over the last few years since I went to University and all. I still watch it alot. My favourite time is when the Winter Olympics rolls around. I snowboard when I can, even play golf. I'm a casual athlete at best. view post

Football, swimming, snowboarding, track, the list goes on.

When did sex(not denying that it requires stamina and skill)become a sport? Because that would be one interesting Olympic event. view post

If you really work it you can wrap "hunting" and sex up into one big event! view post

Well one could argue that the club scene is essentially hunting and sex (if your lucky) all rolled up into one. Not that I was ever really into that whole deal. If you want to take it further.... it's all good as long as the prey is consenting lol

Oh man.... that really sounded sexist didn't it? I swear it wasn't! I'd be perfectly happy being the prey of a female sex hunter lol. view post

it's funny that girls will complain about being 'hunted', especially at a club. HELLO! you got all dolled up and went to the club for the purpose of being hunted!

i've never been to a dance club, personally. and at concerts i usually just have combat pants and a tshirt.

but still, being hunted is nice. hunting is also fun.

ok, i have to focus on work. bad gierra! view post

Football (grrr...soccer) and hockey. And my friends and I Have decided that they are the same sport, just on a different surface.

And if figure skating is a sport, then ballroom dancing should be a sport. Figure skaters might be athletes, but it's not a sport!!!!!! view post

Love American football and basketball. On any given play you just might see an amazing display of athleticism.

Of course these sports become much less interesting when your team loses.

Yes, i agree figure skating is not a sport, i like the comparison to Ballroom dancing. but there is no doubt that it takes a ton of practice and a lot of skill. so give em some props, view post
