What is your favorite sport? posted 24 March 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionWhat is your favorite sport? by Alric, Auditor

I'm just curious which sports people enjoy around these parts. It's always fun to know who you can talk with about certain things. You know, it's a community building thing.

My favorite sport is American Football, which I played for several years. I don't so much have a favorite team as I'm a hard-luck supporter for my local team, the Minnesota Vikings. They've managed to lose the championship game 4 times in their history while never winning.

Secondly, I'd say ice hockey. It was my favorite sport to play, though I ended up being a goalie. While I was a good goalie, it was not nearly as fun as skating out. My favorite team... well since the NHL is canceled, I'll have to say my state's college squad... The Minnesota Golden Gophers.

My third favorite sport... Football (soccer). I'm one of those odd Americans who enjoy the sport and follow the European Leagues. I'm a Liverpool supporter.

So... anyone else? Or, do you quite dislike sports all together? view post

Canadian Football isn't really a sport either, is it?

Basketball for me. Mainly the NBA, but I am not into it nearly as much as when I was in highschool some few years back. Currently I'm getting into March Madness, as I made up a bracket for the first time. view post

Well, CFL is more of a sport than Arena League Football.

As for March Madness, the weekend's games were quite good. I've never seen as many close, overtime games. It was very entertaining. Of course, my bracket is completely shot now. view post

Arena football is a joke. The only thing it's produced is Kurt Warner. Oh well--I live in Des Moines, Iowa, and our old team the Barnstormers(who Warner played for, actually)is the closest thing we've had to a pro team.

How sad is that?

Bah to the elite 8. A pox on their houses and their arenas. The games themselves were so great though. I was in first place in my non-monetary pool for the longest time, now I might as well stop paying attention. Oh well. If the games continue their goodness it'll still be worth it. view post

1a. Mixed Martial arts. To me this is the truest sport. IMHO sports are ritualized warfare and MMA is sports at its most direct and true. As lifelong martial artists its infineatly interesting to see the technicians of the sport at work.
1b. Gymnastics I am gymnastics coach and a bit of a gymnast myself its just incredible to see and perform acrobatics, the feeling of doing a well executed backflip is incredibly exhilirating. Gymnastic as sport is unfortuneatly flawed by the need for judging but man its beautifull to watch.
3. Basketball its just the most watchable sport easy to follow lots of displays of spectacular atheletism, rarely slows down.
4. Gaelic football and hurley haven't seen these sports much but they're very watchable and look immensely fun.

Honourable mention to parkour which is not a sport but an activity as their is no competive element nonetheless its an amazing way to express the human body. view post

I like watching World Cup Soccer. (I was one of those freaks that woke up at 4AM to watch the games live from Korea last time).

What I like to participate in is different. Gymnastics (which I did until I hit puberty and my body was unable to handle the strain). Modern dance followed (lower impact stress on joints). I liked cross country running. Then I started smoking and drinking and, well, yoga and walking are about it for me now. (It's not a bad amount of exercise given that I have been living without a car all my adult life). view post

Favourite sport to play is Rugby Union, but I also swim, play basketball and hockey, and I'm not a bad soccer goalkeeper either. Favourite sport to watch, the same, but I will watch almost any sport and vaguely enjoy it. Apart from anything involving horses. view post

Archery - woohoo!! Brilliant

Also, i love playing football (oh yes, it is not soccer), badminton, tennis, golf, cricket (go England! Beat those Aussies!!!), squash, american football (although i watch that more than play, i don't get much opportunity, i can't afford to play for my team and i don't know how god i am oh, and go Pats!)

Basically i like most sports, although i don't play hockey. I will watch, i wont play. Basketball kind of the opposite. And we don't really play baseball in England. Although, go Redsocks! I had a good American sporting year last year view post

baseball. very spiritual game. all that physics with the ball!

(my favorite camera angle in a televised game is catcher!! love to see that thing come whirlin' toward home plate and shimmy right at the end of the bat!!)

AND if no one gets a hit a game could potentially go on forever.
plus, baseball players. view post

i'm also fond of figure skating but my mate informs me that its not REALLY a SPORT!!! view post

That depends on how you define 'sport'. I would say figure skating counts as a sport, especially if archery and equestrian do. Figure skating involves much more exercise etc. so i would count it. view post

What is your favorite sport? posted 16 August 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionWhat is your favorite sport? by Lucimay, Subdidact

he says figure skating is for 14 year old girls or those with the heart of a 14 year old girl (as if this were some kind of an insult!! i quite enjoyed being a 14 year old girl the year i was a 14 year old girl) he thinks he's being insulting. that's only because he's never been a 14 year old girl and doesn't know what he's missing!!! view post

What is your favorite sport? posted 16 August 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionWhat is your favorite sport? by Deerow, Auditor

I've had this debate a dozen times...the definition of a sport.

My opinion (since nobody asked for it) is that a sport is an athletic activity in which the player(s) directly decide the outcome...basically this means that anything that has judges in it is not a sport.

Boxing is the tricky point. view post

What is your favorite sport? posted 16 August 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionWhat is your favorite sport? by target, Auditor

To be pedantic that can exclude a lot of sports, especially American Football. There a lot of judges/referees in American Football and they can make bad decision etc therefore deciding the outcome of the game. This can be true of many sports including football and tennis to name but two.

It is a tricky point and im not sure i totally agree with that definiton. What i am appalled at though is that there appears to have been some discussion concerning making darts an official Olympic sport...although i think that is really just a British bid to win some more medals view post
