The eye in the Pick's heart *spoilers* posted 15 March 2009 in The Judging EyeThe eye in the Pick's heart *spoilers* by Riardd Ambrosius, Commoner

"Suddenly he stopped. Everyone leaned forward, breathless, struck by the sight of a scar or suture along one of the heart's fat-sheathed chambers. With his thumb Xonghis pressed open the upper lid... A human eye stared at them." --pg. 329 The Judging Eye

This is but one of the many parts in the story I didn't completely understand. Who/what exactly did the Bloody Pick meet in Cil Aujas? Was it the shade of Gin'yursis? Who or what exactly is that dead eye and how did it end up in a man's heart? And was the severed hand supposed to be part of his wife, Gamarrah, was it? view post

Akkamian explains this to Mimara when he says

"The boundaries between the world and the outside are like those between waking and sleep, reason and madness. Wherever the World slumbers or goes mad, the boundaries break down, and the outside leaks through..."
"This place is a topos, like I already said. We literally walk the verge of Hell"

I think that the bloody pick got too close to that black stuff that was engulfing everything in the end. Maybe Gammarah got sucked into the portal and thats how her hand got severed. The bloody pick describes the black stuff,

"It wraps like a shroud it keeps the blackness in."

this is the same stuff that the skin eaters encountered later. At first I thought that the bloody pick was talking about darkness and that he had encountered sranc, after the end of the book I realized he was talking about the portal. The eye in his heart was triggered by hell leaking into the world. Just like the plains of Mengedda when bones came up out of the ground. view post

Akka also explains that in some places, the distance between desire and how things actually are, is shortened. That place leaked in and that desire was...to have eyeballs in hearts. Or maybe it didn't get everything it wanted...

And I suspect the pick actually killed the woman or atleast severed her arm when she was resisting somehow. The reassuring words he chatters would fit where compassion for and bloody violence against a loved one, lose distinction. view post

I was unclear whether the eye in the heart was because of Cil Aujas being a topos, or whether it was a result of the black stuff...

I read the black stuff / great dark seal to be part of the dying, "Curse of Gin'yursis," against men... It seemed to affect Cleric quite differently. One of possession rather than death. I am totally <sic> dying... to find out if Cleric escaped the possession because of some inward strength of his own, or whether he was released from possession when Mimara scuttled the curse.

What's with this Nonman obsession with the gates being unguarded?

Did you hear the one about the guy who went into the French restaurant and noticed an eye in his heart? He called the waiter over to inform him. The waiter promptly said, "Shhhh... Otherwise Everyone will want one..." view post

Hell is also generally associated with choas - corruption of created order etc. So it could simply represent a corruption of the created order and it could just as easily have been a different item placed in the heart as an eye. OR it could be a sort of metaphor made literal as well. Hell being the place of eternal damnation established as a place of judgment on the wickedness of man. The heart being associated with the inner character of the man - the 'eye' in the heart seeks out and exposes the wicked deeds of the bloody pick which are (spiritually) stored up in his heart... view post

Excellent point. Like Ajencis said, the Outside is a sphere of diminishing objectivity.

But whatever it means, I must say this is the scariest sh*t in all four books! <!-- s:shock: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_eek.gif" alt=":shock:" title="Shocked" /><!-- s:shock: --> view post

I think everybody is forgetting something. Akka specifically asked the man to cut out the Pick's heart, so he could see it. If it was simply the chaos of Hell bleeding through, or whatever, why would Akka ask to see that specifically.

Achamian knew what was there, he just wanted to confirm it. The eye in the heart is important, and we will find out why in subsequent books, I imagine. view post

Or he knew that something would be in the Pick's heart. Maybe he had no idea it would be an eye specifically, but he knew that whatever evil affects people in the Black Halls begins with the heart. So obviously, something would be there. view post

Some parallelism going on here with Kellhus pulling out his own flaming heart? So no Eye could be in his now . . . view post

For some reason the humourous idea comes to mind that plenty of times before in his life Akka has asked people to cut open and take out dead mens hearts - but all the other times they were normal and he's like &quot;Uh, okay, no reason...lets keep walking&quot; like it was a pythonesque social fopah and it's just a tad embaressing to have, like, asked someone to be cut open for a bit of a gawk at their heart. view post

I will agree with the distinctions between Reality and the OUtside, Objectivity and Subjectivity being blurred. Achamian saw that the Pick was in love with the previous owner of the hand he still held, and by deduction decided that the heart is where the man's deviance would manifest. He didn't necessarily know it would be an eye, but it's logical to assume that when the distinctions between symbol and reality are dimmed, the distinction between the organ and the ideal would be dimmed as well. So, &quot;see into my heart&quot; or &quot;you are in my heart forever&quot; turns into something somewhat more...dire. view post

The man specifically said something, for whatever reason, to the effect that his &quot;heart couldn't see.&quot; Achamian just knew that would become the literal truth, because of the nature of the topoi. The Pick told him where to look. view post
