Olympics... posted 12 August 2004 in Off-Topic DiscussionOlympics... by Alric, Auditor

So, the Olympics are starting Friday (tomorrow), and I was wondering what the rest of you thought about the games. Do you still get excited for the Olympics? Do you have a favorite sport, event, athlete? Do you enjoy the opening/closing ceremonies?

For me, I do enjoy the Olympics, both summer and winter. I actually enjoy the show of the Opening ceremony, though my wife really dislikes the ceremonies. Her favorite sport is gymnastics and track and field events. I enjoy swimming, decathalon, gymnastics. But, I think I prefer the winter Olympics to the summer as I'm a winter sports enthusiast.

I am particularily looking forward to the Thorpe/Phelps swimming dual.

How about you? view post

Baseball... I always seem to miss those games. Sadly, I don't have the cable coverage I'd need to be able to watch all the sports that I'd like. I miss the old Olympics coverage of over a decade ago. They put everything they could on regular stations, as most people didn't have cable and were unwilling to pay to watch.

Oh well. The baseball tourny should be interesting this year. view post

Yeah, you can't see it all and that really sux, it's all so interesting. view post

I'll likely watch the ceremonies, and though there's no specific sports I'd like to watch, but if I'm channel surfing and come across anything interesting I'll probably sit and watch. view post

I usually start out the same way, looking for something to watch, but my tv just seems to get stuck on the Olympics. It's the nature of how they broadcast it these days, with the dramatic music and viginettes. Oh well, I'll miss some of the games because I've got tickets to a Vikings game on Saturday. <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> view post

Will probably watch quite a bit on the BBCI thing on Sky, they give you a choice of what you want to watch by showing about five different things, yesterday watched the Boxing, some Gymnastics, the diving comp. Boxing wasnt bad, a bit slack in places but the punches were crisp. view post

It's been quite some time since I've seen fencing aired on the Olympics. Sadly, this year, I missed it.

Sovin, how long have you fenced? view post

I like to watch pretty much whatever they put on, though I enjoy watching some of the sports more than others. But, the athletes are all so amazing that it's all great to watch. I watched some gymnastics, volleyball, and swimming today, just because those were what happened to be on while I was watching. view post

ah, a footballer. It looks like a pretty good tournament shaping up for that sport. I'll be interested in how it turns out.

Personally, I'm a bit distracted in that sport due to Micheal Owens leaving the Liverpool Reds for Real Madrid. Oh well, such is sports some times. view post

I tend to dip in and out at the moment seeing what options are available on the BBCi, just some of them today really havent been worth bothering with. For gods sake who wants to watch blooming table tennis. At least gymnastics, diving and volleyball all have a damn good reason to watch them, well two in some cases. lol view post

Unfortunately soccer is often stained by money, here in Europe. It's a shame. We are talking of one of the most exciting sports ever. view post

I think money stains a great deal of all professional sports, in all places. I know it's the case here in the US. view post

Thats just the problem with all sports, the clubs with the most money can buy the best players and so makes it more uneven each time they play.

But thats what happens, although it could be argued that the smaller clubs have a chance by selling the players. view post

Alric, about seven years sporadically. If you squish all the time together probably about 3-4 years straight. Now I'm starting again this saturday at college. Very excited. view post

Well, good luck with it Sovin. You'll have to let us know how it goes. I've always admired the sport, and people who participate in it. view post

Just got back from fencing practice. It went pretty well, considering I haven't done it in about 9 months. I did sabre; some drills with returning team members, a couple practice bouts. view post

I did fencing for a bit, was a bit of an anomaly at it though, I learned to use the blade left and right handed which made it difficult to judge me as at times I'd swap hands after a point which meant that they'd have to change thinking to attack. Then when they'd figured it out I'd swap back. I wasnt brilliant but good enough to progress through the uni's team. view post

Is switching hands legal? I thought it violated rules. view post
