How about a movie about Prince of Nothing? posted 12 July 2007 in Author Q & AHow about a movie about Prince of Nothing? by Balrog, Commoner

Hi !
I´m from germany and in the middle of TWP. I just love the books till here and although I know that it would be unbelievable difficult, I´m all the time, while reading, thinking about how great a movie of the books would be. of course there are so many things in the book you simply can´t bring into pictures, but still I think it would be just amazing, if the right director would be involved (Wachowsky Brothers? J.J. Abrahams, Christopher Nolan or maybe even David Lynch <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> .
Anyway my question is, if mr. bakker would like to see his books as a movietrologie or if he simply believes that wouldn´t work or they would be comercialized?
Actually I´m allready thinking about my favorite cast <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> . How about Brad Pitt as Kelhus, Chrsitan Bale as Cnaiür, Monica Bellucci as Esmenet, Jessica Alba as Serwe and maybe Bob Hoskins as Akka, but he might be a little bit to old.

I and my friends who have read this have talked about this. We all agree that the only way a movie would work would be if it were CGI, NC-17 and utterly uncut. otherwise, it would just be a cheap hack and slash job of a movie. view post

Most of us would, unfortunately no studio is going to pony up the money to do a movie that they know in advance will be NC-17 because then it isn't going to be picked up by the major theatre chains.

I think even to get it down to an R rating done in a similar fashion to say 300 would require cutting a rather lot of the movie. I disagree on doing it completely CGI btw, CGI as an effect in otherwise live-action movies is getting so good now that a live action is possible for just about anything.

I think you would end up having to compromise a lot to get a movie with major distribution out of the series unfortunately. Of course I would absolutely love to see it done right on the big screen in all its dark and majestic glory. view post

While I too probably would go and see a film adaptation, we'd all go with the expectation that it would be bad; it would be and we would seethe. I don't even think that the inclusion of good CGI would save it; CGI can't save a bad story. While the story was good to begin with, the script writers would inevitably balls it up beyond recognition (a la Lord of the Rings. In the past few years I have seen two good film adaptations of favourite novels, (i) The English Patient upon whose adaptation to the screen the author collaborated, and (ii), surprisingly, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which I thought was an excellent movie, which did remain true to the original novel. I gather that there is going to be a film adaptation of one of Steve Erikson's novels, Deadhouse Gates; I'm waiting to be underwhelmed.

On the other hand, regarding performances of novels, the best that have been done in my opinion, were BBC Radio 4 radio plays. The two that spring to mind are The Lord of the Rings, over 13 hours long(!), and His Dark Materials; and both are available as CD's. These truly are good examples of novels turned into performance pieces. They are meticulously researched, well produced, and brilliantly performed (Gandalf -actor's name? Ian Macekellen?- from the screen version was also in the BBC version). A would be film producer could do worse than hiring Radio 4 staff - at least they would read the novels before they started cutting. view post

Well, I'll hold off voting for a movie to be made of PoN for now. The themeatic subtext and background shading is just both too dense and subtle for a movie to encompass imo.

Wait and see how the Stormbringer movie turns out first, if they can do a decent job on that then I would believe PoN was feasible - I really cant see a decent cut of that making it past test screenings though. (oh, and Moorcock is set to be fulling involved in script approvale etc for that)

$1000 on the dude who played Morpheus in the Matrix getting Akka's role tho <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( --> . view post

Personally I'd love to see it done as an animation... not like Disney style or anything, but something more similar to Haibane Renmei, Paprika, Ghost in the Shell, or the Animatrix. Probably just because I love animation so much, but somehow I think it would work better than live action.

I know that's not going to happen, though. <!-- s:cry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt=":cry:" title="Crying or Very sad" /><!-- s:cry: -->

It would take a seriously gutsy studio to produce PoN as a movie the way it deserves. Very much NC-17 material.

(As far as the suggestion of David Lynch as a director--that would be amazing. I don't think he'd have a problem with the subject matter at all, either.) view post

I mostly meant that no studio would support a movie ahead of time that in order to have the same theme and mood to the story would require an NC-17 rating, it just wouldn't happen, that goes for animated as well although to a lesser extent. It all boils down to movie chains not picking up anything rated above an R and so the movie studios are leery about funding anything that won't see a wide theatrical release. view post

I tend to agree. I'm hoping that Stormbringer proves the exception that breaks the rule - if it ends up getting made - cuz none of the fanbase would likely bother seeing it if it is watered down to less than an R rating... view post

There is a plan for a Strombringer movie? I think I've read the first book in that series. Sounds familiar anyway. Been awhile since I read it, thats the one with the select few &quot;Chosen&quot; or whatever they were called who are freakishly strong and some are dedicated to a particular God and rule a Kingdom? I can't even recall any of the names from the book but I do remember that I enjoyed it. Didn't seem that twisted though just violent. view post

Realistically, it's not possible to make a Prince of Nothing movie that would hold true to the novels- not unless the movies appeared as a trilogy, and each of the three movies were six hours long.

However, the same issues are there in Martin's ASOIAF and it appears that HBO intends to do a Rome-style series of these novels...so, perhaps it is not out of the question that PON could end up as a long-running series.

The other problem is this....unless fantasy is 'a household name', i.e, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, or Harry Potters, it's very difficult to see a major studio taking a chance on a fantasy movie. As good as this series is- and as good as Bakker writes, PON is not yet sufficiently 'well-known' for a movie to be a serious consideration from Hollywood- or, at this point, for a HBO series.

I have to say, though...if it did ever happen....I'm already thinking of some of my favorite scenes and how cool they would be (the Andiamine Heights scene at the end of the Darkness that comes before; the Scarlet Schoolmen battling the Cishaurum, Cnaiur in a battle-rage)...and, of course, the close of the third book...what an intense to a movie that would be. view post

The Prince of Nothing is never going to be made into a movie. It is to violent, dark and intellegent for Hollywood and to expensive for anyone else.
Also, on Balrog's casting. Brad Pitt as Kellhus? Come on, Brad Pitt's a great actor but I just don't see him as Kellhus. Christian Bale could maybe do Kellhus, but I just don't see Brad Pitt as Kellhus. Also, I don't see Christain Bale as Cnauir. I'm not familiar with Monica Bellucci, but I have doubts about her being a good Esmi. Again with Jessica Alba, I just don't see her as playing Serwe. view post
