Okay, it's everyone's favorite time again, another poll! Just curious about your sex, as in gender. You're disappointed now aren't you, after eagerly clicking on the title?

I'm not sure why I enjoy data gathering so much, I think it's curiosity. view post

I am quite disappointed in the lack of female members. Do you think it's the books, the forum, or the genre? view post

14th vote, 14th male. Bit of a puzzle really. Plenty of female members on other fantasy boards out there. view post

My first thought about the gender disparity among forum goers here is that it's likely related to the general lack of strong female characters in Scott's first couple of novels in the series. I agree with his reasons for choosing to portray a male dominated society in a visceral, realistic way, but at the same time, it's a choice that might alienate many female readers.

On the other hand, with the limited cross section of PoN fans these forums represent, it might just be that the female fans just haven't made their way here yet. Who knows. view post

Well, whatever the reason, our odds aren't looking good. view post

I know of one female poster here, Linda, but that's kinda because I invited her over here. She's read the series though, I believe.

My guess would be to give them time. This is a small forum still, despite the recent upsurge in members. I'll see what I can do to recruit more to this site. view post

This is too funny! I guess I'm the first female to answer this poll... The point about the lack of strong female characters in the novel is an interesting one though I think ultimately if the writing is strong, people (of either gender) will flock to the work. view post

Er... female. We do exist here, honest. view post

Sex posted 11 February 2005 in Off-Topic DiscussionSex by RevCasy, Candidate

Male.

At one time I would have said the high male:female ratio was simply a reflection of the gender disparity on the internet in general *laugh*. However, I'm pretty sure women outnumber men online nowadays.

I think it's probably partly the genre and (as has already been said) partly the book itself. view post

Oooh, look, another woman among you!

In my reading group, we read The Prince of Nothing, and I think I was the only female who actually thoroughly enjoyed it. The other women balked at the violence and politics. They did however wish there was more written about Akka and Esmi. Maybe it's a girl thing. Maybe I should re-think my vote in this poll, then... view post

ok...no girls since february '05 or did everyone just stop giving a hoot?

i'm only resurrecting this because i was beginning to wonder myself if there were any women here!!!!
and also to repudiate some one's opinion ( in a couple of different threads by the way) that bakker HASN'T written strong or interesting female characters!!
Esmenet, Serwe, and particularly the Empress (who i find to be just the best kind of scary mommy!) . All strong women. the whiney weak women in Darkness get killed, just like the whiney weak men!!! of course things may happen to these three women in WP that I'm not aware of since i'm just finishing Darkness.
or maybe we just have different definitions of "strong. view post
