Are there female skin spies? posted 25 March 2007 in The Thousandfold ThoughtAre there female skin spies? by Buckethead, Peralogue

this may have been covered, but i haven't seen it...

When Xerius is killed by the skin spy posing as his mother, he discovers it when reaching for her pelvis and finding an erection... one would think that if there were female skin spies one would have been used then. The thing that made me question this was the fact that Cnaiur has the skin spy depicting serwe come to his bed multiple times... we all know a penis wouldn't scare Cnaiur away, but is he so insane at the time to not notice? (although i guess it is obvious that on some level he understands it's a skin spy and has given up caring)

mind you he was pretty fricken mad.... view post

There is no conclusive evidence to there not being a female skin spy but I believe they do not exist. The skin spy mind set seems to be almost male in essence, meaning their desire to rape the world. There is no quote to support that it is just the feeling that the skin spies give me. Of course when I say male I mean that in a very deranged sense. view post

We've been over the question of skin-spy plumbing several times. It is a fact that skin spies may impersonate both male and female humans; it is also likely that the skin spies are cloned out of bottles rather than bred by biological parents. Given what we know about skin spy behaviour (they'll shag anything that moves) a reasonable conclusion is that they are hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female organs. The question of gender is therefore probably a superfluous one. view post

my only question in response to the hermaphrodite theory is how come there is never any mention of sexual desire apart from a skin spy's phallus? it seems to me that if they had female reproductive organs they would also have feminine sexual desires, not just masculine ones. view post

seeing as how the kin spies are new constructs and the non-men (as far as we have seen) have all aligned with the Consult, and only male non-men exist, I don't think they really considered the benefit of female creations, merely those who could mimic females. The natural aggression of males along with a heightened libido driven by violence rather than sexuality, I think, would be ideal. view post

does that mean they only think of their penis? does anyone here know a violently aroused hermaphrodite? view post

The most appalling scene to me, in the whole trilogy, must be the image of Cnaiur kissing the true face of the thing posing as Serwe. That had me throwing up all night...

Given the physical differences, even without getting naked, between men and women (Adam's apple, breast, hip, etc.) beyond facial, it seems the skin-spies' morphing ability must be very formidable indeed. Reminds me of the liquid metal T-1000 from Terminator 2.

Which reminds me of a question: what's with Geshrunni? Why was his face taken? The skin-spies do not need an actual face to pose as that person -- so is that just casual cruelty? view post

I agree with you regarding the morphing ability; but if they'rre all sinew not flesh and bone it might be a little easier to accomplish; they could also use prosthetic devices. Some individuals are no doubt easier to fool than others; that pervert Cnaiur is probably one of the easier.

The treatment of Geshrunni was probably an example of their cruelty as you say; but it was also a security measure - they wished to conceal his identity to safeguard the impersonator. Questions would be asked of an impersonator if the original turns up brutally murdered the next day. view post

We know that not to be true. The Inchoroi mention that they have spies even in a surviving mansion of the Nonmen. The Erratics are a different story, of course, but we definitely know that some part of Nonman civilization survives and is an enemy of the Consult. view post

I would imagine that there are no 'female' skin-spies. The only ones we have seen so far, queen/serwe have had penisies. view post

I have read a Q&A with Scott where he catagorically stated that there are no female skin spies. Also the taking of faces seems fairly common amongst the creatures of the Consult - Mekeritig has a cloak made of faces so that he can remember those who gave him a hard time and the Sranc like making things out of human skin - perhaps it was a method of 'memorising' Geshrunni's features - we known it takes a while for skin spies to mimmick a subject properly. view post

How do we know that? You just mean the height and build that it mentions?
They never seem to have any difficulty with faces. view post

Yeh - the height, build etc. But we are never told specificly how they get the face right - even a trained artist requires a model when painting a likeness - it doesn't seem too unlikely that copying the specifics of a face (which is ever the prime subject of scrutiny) would require some study/preperation. There are no examples of a skinspy copying one straight of the bat. view post

There is lots we don't know. But the mutilation of Geshrunni's face served a mundane purpose: that of security. Suppose a skin spy wanted to impersonate Geshrunni, he does so, and then Geshrunni's mortal remains are discovered the next day; cover broken. For the skin spy to function he must dispose of his model's remains - taking their faces concealed the impersonation. view post

10 points - can't argue with that. view post

It didn't really, as, Geshrunni was still easily recognised by the Scarlet Spires without his face and they never seem to take faces after that.
We have seen the skin spies copy a lot of faces where it does not look like much study was put in, they are probably good at what they do and just need to see the persons face. Kellhus mentions imperceptable changes in height and build but never that the face was any different. view post

And they recognized him by other means. Nevertheless, mutilation would have always been a good idea if a skin spy wanted to succeed in its imposture. Questions would be asked if the original's remains were recognized as I pointed out.

Kellhus did just that for Skaeos(?), the Nansur vizier; of course Kellhus had never met Skaeos de jure before. Kellhus was able to detect the lack of facial musculature. The skin spies evidently do a very good job but they are not impenetrable to even a blind Dunyain. view post

Well if you take somebodies face, I imagine he has to be identified by other means.
Questions would indeed be raised, and he threw the body in the river. We don't know why he took his face though, it could have been to get off. :p
He could have taken the clothes as well, then the body would not have been brought to the attention of the Scarlet spires. His face was taken, which would be very suspicious, the body would be investigated unlike a normal dead body, and this would hinder this spy. I would think they found it was Geshrunni because the spy stopped pretending to be him and he 'disappeared' s they investigated.

I was referring to Sarcellus, when he was replaced by Gaorta, as the original skin spy was slain in battle. He was imperceptably different in height etc, but not in face. view post
