Hey scott,
Just wondering, How did you invision Achamian, Kellhus, Esmenet, and Cnaiur as looking, specifically? I know you described them several times but no matter how hard I try, I can't get a propper image in my head...the reason I ask is because I love to do Acryllic portraits and I wanted to, maybe, do one of the PoN characters. Maybe it would be easier to describe them in terms of what actor would play them in the movie that I would definately see if such a thing were to come to pass. hoping? wishing? anyway, what do you think? view post

yeah, I was wondering why there wasn't a fan art section...I guess you're right tho, too many people have different ideas what the characters look like, but I thought that, being the one who conceived them, Scott should have a good idea of what they look like. view post

There's some great stuff that can happen with fan art. I know GRRM put out a great book of art based on his Song of Ice and Fire last year, and much of it was fan art. Of course, he has the advantage of having an enormous readership, but I've got no doubt that Bakker will have a similarly sized fanbase some day. If I had art skills I'd have been inspired on numerous occaisions to present my visualization of many different events in the story. view post

Hmm. It's a good question, but I guess I'm unsure how to go about this without spending an inordinate amount of time typing - the questions are really starting to pile up fast!

Actor analogies maybe? I don't think that would work because with the exception of Esmenet, no one seems to fit.

You do know, that part of the reason I shy away from descriptive inventories is that I want readers to decide these things for themselves. So I guess my question back to you, Edge, would be what do you want them to look like? view post

*sigh* I knew that, but each time I think of Achamian, for instance, I keep wanting to stereotype him as a "wise old wizard," or Cnaiur as Conan the Barbarian. I guess I just wanted to veer away from typical fantasy fanart seeing as the people in PoN aren't typical fantasy characters. I think I've been reading too much R.A. Salvatore. Also, when I think of Akka and Esmi together, sometimes I visualize Ana Nicole Smith (only with dark hair) and J. Howard Marshall *shudders* gross. view post

i think it would be excellent to see everyones take on what the characters look like.

in fact, i think i will dojust that. i'm moving into a new apartment in about a week, and i will have lots of light with which to paint, and maybe i'll do a series.

all i paint is portraits anyways, so why not.

i'd definitely be interested in seeing other people's interpretations. view post

I'm artistically challenged, so nothing I created would ever see the light of day, it would suck too much lol. view post

I'm working on a sketch of the No-God, tornadoes being my area of expertise, but I'm finding it hard to capture the aura of evil, the "dread presence" described in the book. Just depicting a sarcophagus in a tornado isn't enough. I'm not sure that any true pictorial representation of Mog-Pharau will be possible, but if I'm ever satisfied with my drawing I'll post the result.

Of course I love the idea of a tornadic vortex of evil. I've wondered why Scott settled on the image of a tornado (and a tornado is what the whirlwind that surrounds the No-God is, despite the fact that the word itself never appears in the book). But maybe it's not so big a mystery. One time I showed a friend some video of the May 3, '99 Moore OK tornado as it crosses the highway, and my friend actually said, "It looks like some kind of demon!" view post

Wow, I commend you for your bravery! Depicting Mog-Pharau would be the last thing I would ever do. I remember trying to draw Sauron before the LoTR movies ever came out, not the easiest thing to do. But good luck none the less view post

I eagerly await what may come of this....(I am not gifted in the portraiture biz at all). Because there's such a lack of description of each character...I doubt that many of us will agree on a single portrait. For example, I don't imagine Achamian as a "wise old wizard" at all. He's middle-aged, balding and tubby. LOL.

Anyway, good luck, all y'all with artistic tendencies! view post

Fan art for the PoN posted 20 March 2006 in Author Q & AFan art for the PoN by Edge of Certainty, Subdidact

this may sound really really strange, but I looked up Achamian's name in TDTCB and it says he's 47, so I looked up "47 year old" on google and it came up with many pictures of John McEnroe...I saw his face and I said "perfect!" and so now John McEnroe is the model for Akka. Only I found out that since Akka is from Conriya and Conriya is a Ketyai country, that makes Akka a Ketyai and Ketyais are darkish skinned...so Akka will be a dark skinned John McEnroe only a bit more tubbier and with a beard! How's that for a non-stereotypical sorcerer ? view post

If you drew Akka throwing down a tennis racket, eyes and mouth glowing as he prepares to annihilate the line-judge, then... well, that'd be funny. view post

Actually the choice of Mog-Pharau was easy, given the fact that: a) I'm not really good with human faces, and b) I'd already played around with sketches of tornadoes and tornadic storms.

With LoTR (the book, this was way before the movie) my first try at artwork was an attempt to draw an Ent, mainly because after reading the trilogy several times I still didn't have a clear picture in my mind of what an Ent would look like. The results weren't pretty. In the end I concluded that it's extremely difficult to draw Ents that aren't "funny looking" in a negative way. The movie did a better job on Treebeard and Co. than I expected.

Superkeer, that was pretty damn funny! I'm tempted to try and Photoshop into existence that image of McEnroe with the glowing eyes and mouth... view post

When I pictured Cnaiur, from the get-go, my mind conjured up the image of Gino Acevedo, the top prosthetics guy with WETA, when he was done up as one of the corsairs in RotK. I hadn't actually seen the special features bit that detailed all that in quite a while when I read the books, so I guess I mentally added the forty pounds of iron-hard muscle, several dozen swazond, and the, uh, being nuts. Hey, McEnroe completely works as Achamian, so I figure my idea must have a little merit... view post

Fan art for the PoN posted 06 April 2006 in Author Q & AFan art for the PoN by Entropic_existence, Moderator

When I picture Cnaiur I often see him as the sort of archetypal intelligent barbarian, much in the manner of Conan (literature as opposed to the movies. In the books he was actually quite intelligent), although with a build that is leaner, but still brutishly muscled if that makes any sense. Cnaiur always seems to me like he should be this larger than life figure. Tall, hard, lean, well muscled, intimidating and radiating this aura and posture of barely contained violence. view post

Fan art for the PoN posted 19 April 2006 in Author Q & AFan art for the PoN by Metaver, Candidate

Well then, is there going to be a fan art thread or something? Because I think it would be interesting to see how everyone sees the character in their imagination/minds while/after reading the book.

Heck, even I would draw some of the characters... Just that, I draw anime/manga style... So that would be weird in a way, but I wouldn't care. view post
